Dudley police issued with Tasers

Tasers have been issued to police officers in Dudley, it was announced today.

Twenty-eight officers across the patch have been trained to use the devices.

They are already used by police in Wolverhampton and Walsall and will be introduced in Sandwell in the next few weeks.

Until now firearms officers and the Operations Support Unit (OSU) have been allowed to deploy the tasers in Dudley, but now some officers will have 24-hour access to the equipment if they need it.

Dudley police commander, Chief Superintendent Keith Baldwin, said: “I anticipate the use of the taser being minimal but it will be a valuable addition to our options.

“Just the production of a taser has been enough on the occasions the OSU have deployed it to stop a situation developing. My officers have undergone extensive training in how and when to use the taser and their supervisors have also been trained in which situations it should be issued under.”

Firearms officers used tasers 93 times in the West Midlands from their introduction in 2004 up to the launch of new guidelines at the end of 2009, after which tasers was issued to specially trained Pcs for use in strictly controlled situations.

The taser uses an electrical current to temporarily disrupt the control of a suspect’s muscles, allowing police to make an arrest.

Stop messing about and give them guns.
I live in Spain and believe me you DON’T argue with a Cop with a gun on his belt.
    It is called a deterant.

I know, we saw them when we were in Torremolinos a few weeks ago. But this is nothing but a nanny state, and the only people who get punished here are people who try to defend themselves or their property.Too many do-gooders.

The only problem is that the type of person who joins the police these days tends to be lacking in the common sense department. I am waiting for the first incident when an innocent person going for his wallet ends up being zapped by some trigger-happy kid in a uniform. God help him if he also has a heart complaint or pacemaker.

It’s always the case of gung ho followed by inquests and “learning lessons”

Paul the Police have a hard enough job as it is. For that comment you deserve to be TAZERED

Yes Mo, the job has become harder. That’s the reason why recruits to the police require a good standard of education to take the training and have social skills to deal with the public.

Most of the recruits nowadays are lacking in all the above. This is why you read in the press about public complaints concerning the stupidity of police officers in handling incidents.

Apart from the tax collectors with the speed cameras I think the Police do a good job on the whole, given their workload and resources.

          Paul,

“Most of the recruits nowadays are lacking in all the above” – your detailed experience of modern (or historic for that matter) police recruits is what exactly?

Of course you will read complaints about how some police officers deal with some incidents. There will always be cases of stupid, narrow minded and far sighted people getting into the police, as they will into every walk of life. These are truly a minority. You will never hear about the good work, brave acts and difficult decisions made on a daily basis by police officers because that simply doesn’t make readable headlines.

I don’t expect you to change your viewpoint on the police, just acknowledge that we’re not all “lacking in the common sence department”.

          Yours,
          A trigger-happy kid in a uniform.

What is my experience Alex? I will now tell you. In my job I work in a place which runs all manner of courses. Most students are well behaved, articulate, attend their classes, do what they have to do and go home without incident.

On the other hand there are “students?” who are rowdy, rude, fight in corridors, couldn’t string a sentence together without f***ing this and f***ing that, require security guards hovering around to keep order.

    Who are these morons?

The Public Service course whose little charmers hope to become police officers.

If you need any more information Alex, let me know. I have plenty more.
