National Lottery ticket machines are set to be removed from 175 stores across the country – as they are failing to rake in at least £1,000 a week.

Lottery operator Camelot has given retailers 60 days to turn their fortunes around or lose the distinctive blue sales terminal.

Sam Singh of SanJ’s News and Wines, in Walsall Road, Aldridge, is among those to get a letter from Camelot warning him the terminal will be ripped out next month after notching up sales of just £568 a week. He blames increased competition locally.

The 44-year-old said: “We have been here two years and in that time we have got the lottery sales up.

“But shortly after we bought the business,Tesco Express arrived just yards away and they were given a terminal too.

“We independent retailers are already suffering but Camelot gives machines to the big chain stores.

“Who can sell up to £1,000 in lottery tickets with the big stores on the doorstep?

“Most of our customers are old people who rely on us to supply their newspapers and lottery tickets. We provide a service for them. It is very frustrating.”

SanJ’s has until Friday to appeal against Camelot’s decision.

Camelot spokesman Rob Dwight said a “sales improvement programme” was launched in February.

He also said around half of the under-perfoming 175 shops were chain stores.

“As operator of The National Lottery, Camelot’s objective is to maximise returns to the good causes through selling tickets in a socially responsible way,” Mr Dwight said.

“In order to maximise our sales potential – and therefore the amount of money we deliver for the good causes – we have to ensure that players have easy access to our games. We also need to get the best return on each and every one of our terminals.”

Tickets and scratchcard games are available at 28,500 outlets across the country.

The increasing stranglehold of Tesco and its monopoly on all aspects of life in the UK continues – and we are entirely complicit.

If you are worried by this story then stop shopping at Tesco. It’s really that simple.

Connor is absolutely right. Shop locally and support family run small businesses. I live in Castlecroft – we have one of the best Butchers in Wolverhampton on our doorstep – streets ahead of the mass produced packs on the shelves in a massive supermarket !

They must be doing something right with the recent announcment of record profits. There are a lot of happy people out there who shop at these places. Supporting your local shop is fine if you are prepared to pay more for the goods. With the current economic climate and a new government who are about to put a few more people on the dole I would say that Tescos and other great supermarkets are going to make even more profits.

I live on Walsall Road and I always try to use this local store despite Tesco being less than one minute walk away. I could never understand why a Tesco was needed round the corner anyway when Aldridge centre is less than one mile away too. Whoever agreed to that has helped make this man’s life very difficult.

Sounds like grounds for an anti-Tesco Facebook campaign. Now there’s a thought.

Connor Davies, not everyone is complicit in using Tesco, a few years ago I used one of their stores and was treated very badly since then I have not and will not set foot in a Tesco store. I will sooner go without if I cannot get it another store. I will never set foot in a Tesco store again.

Agree with Connor’s post. What has made matters worse for the independent retailer is the emergence of the Tesco Express stores, busy stealing peoples livelihoods. Why do arrogant, out-of-touch councillors allow this ?!

Camelot are just money grabbing conmen who deserve to loose their lottery license – when the lottery was first introduced the prize money was dependant on that draws sales – now they know the prize money well in advance – upto a fortnight b4 the draw – so if the prize money is being fixed what else is? just a big con – camelot, more like sheriff of nottingham !!
