Holiday rep on murder charge
Wednesday 19th May 2010, 11:30AM BST.
A holiday rep from the Black Country was today charged with the murder of his girlfriend on the Greek island of Crete.
Luke Walker, aged 22, of Brierley Hill, is suspected of killing Chelsea Hyndman in a violent attack. Greek police have charged him with premeditated murder.
The 21-year-old from West Yorkshire died on Monday after suffering ruptured internal organs.
Walker was due to appear before a court in Heraklion, the island’s capital, for a hearing tomorrow.
Ms Hyndman, from Castleford, died a day after she was admitted to hospital in Heraklion suffering from abdominal pain. She had been transferred to the Venizelio hospital where she underwent an operation but died in intensive care.
A Greek Police spokeswoman in Athens said: “The doctors who examined the girl told police her internal organs were ruptured. This was not due to illness. It was the result of physical violence.”
She said the couple were living together in rented rooms in the coastal holiday resort of Malia and added: “It is said that they often quarrelled.”
Lawyer George Koundourakis, who will represent Walker in court, said his client would appear in court for a preliminary hearing at 12pm tomorrow which would establish whether Walker will be allowed bail.
A tribute page set up in homage to Ms Hyndman on Facebook has attracted more than 600 members.
Ms Hyndman and Walker had returned to work for the summer on the island where they had been holiday reps for three years.
