A decision on a controversial bid to build a new mosque in Walsall will be made by August, it was revealed today.

Leaders of the town's Ahmadiyya Muslim Association say an appeal against the refusal of plans to convert a disused warehouse in Vicarage Place - which attracted more than 800 objections - has now been lodged with the planning inspectorate in Bristol.

And Dr Azher Siddiq, from the group, said officials had informed him a judgement would be reached within the next three months, following a site visit and investigation of the plans.

"From our point of view, we have submitted all the relevant information and we hope it is sufficient for this decision to be reversed," he said.

Members of the authority's development control committee refused the application despite officers recommending approval.
