Teenager stole his grandmother’s purse
Saturday 8th May 2010, 9:48AM BST.
A teenager who stole his grandmother’s purse containing £1,150 for a night out in Birmingham, has been ordered to pay back the cash he still owes.
A court heard that Brinsley Forrester-Instone, aged 18, felt so guilty the following day when he woke up, that he admitted what he had done to police officers and returned £680 to his grandmother.
At Walsall Magistrates’ Court yesterday, the teenager was ordered to pay back the remaining £470 and to pay £85 costs.
And he was given an 18-month supervision order and must spend 21 days with Addaction — a drug and alcohol treatment programme.
Passing sentence, presiding magistrate Philip Holmes told Forrester-Instone: “The worst part of this offence is the upset you caused to someone you like.”
Forrester-Instone stole the purse from his grandmother’s home in Leamore, Walsall, before he hit the city’s pubs and clubs on April 22, the court heard.
Mr Colin Heald, prosecuting, said he gave £680 of the cash back to his grandmother along with her driving licence.
But he admitted that he had spent the rest and thrown his grandmother’s purse in a nearby pond.
Remorseful
Mrs Ayeisha Khandia, defending, told the court: “He attended at his grandmother’s home and on the spur of the moment he grabbed her purse. He didn’t know how much was in there, and admits that he spent some of it on a night out.” She went on: “The next morning when he came to his senses, he returned the rest of the money.”
She said afterwards he approached two police officers on foot patrol in Caldmore and handed himself in, asking them to arrest him.
Forrester-Instone, of Patterson Street, Delves, admitted theft.
The teenager, who is expecting a baby with his partner, was said to be “very remorseful” about the incident.
The court heard he had not spoken to his grandmother since the theft because his bail conditions prevented him from doing so, despite her trying to contact him.
Mrs Khandia said: “This is the first time he has done anything like this and he is entirely remorseful of his actions.”
