Polling station is axed
Wednesday 28th April 2010, 5:59PM BST.
A mobile polling station in the Black Country has been withdrawn, prompting some residents to complain they will struggle to vote.
A portable office had previously been installed in Carder Crescent, Bilston, for national and local ballots but Wolverhampton City Council has omitted the site from this year’s list of polling stations.
Officials today claimed the decision was taken after “threats of violence and abuse to staff” at the last two elections.
Voters are instead being advised to travel to Daisy Bank Community Centre in Ash Street, just under a mile away, instead.
Susan Wood, aged 54, of Sheldon Close, Bilston, says many of her neighbours are elderly, do not drive and will be unable to get to the alternative booth.
