Family’s car covered by incoming tide

Tuesday 27th April 2010, 11:30AM BST.

A holiday turned into a washout when a Wolverhampton family’s car became stuck in the mud and was then engulfed by the tide at a popular tourist beach.

The family, including a boy and his parents, had been trying out their jetski at Burnham-on-Sea beach in Somerset when disaster struck. To their horror, the Ford Mondeo estate sank into the soft sand and mud.

Crowds watched as the father desperately tried to retrieve belongings from inside the car with the tide coming in.

Soon waves lapped over the vehicle and the car was almost completely submerged last night. It was later declared a write-off.

Coastguards and a rescue charity were dispatched at around 6pm to the coastline, which has the second highest tidal rise and fall in the world.

Rescuers had to wait 90 minutes for the tide to go down before a Burnham Area Rescue Boat (Barb) tractor towed the car to shore.

The family, from Wolverhampton, were on their way to Pontin’s in nearby Brean when they stopped to use the jetski on the first night of their holiday. They made a donation to Barb in return for their rescue.

Mark Newman, chairman of Barb, said today: “There was a very fast incoming tide and there was a bit of a race against time. They managed to salvage their suitcases and holiday gear but unfortunately the vehicle couldn’t be saved.

“The family were pretty distressed and shaken. One of our crew drove them onto Pontin’s The car appeared to have been written off. Salt doesn’t mix well with cars.”

Several West Midland families are involved in dramas every year along the Somerset coast, which also includes Weston-super-Mare.

Mr Newman said: “The Bristol Channel estuary does come in very quickly and we see this kind of incident frequently. Last summer there were six in one week and I would expected there were 20 or so during 2009.”

    SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER.
Many people from the Midlands use their watercraft without checking out local conditions, tides etc and don’t maintain them properly either. It’s a good job there are people out there who can assist these inexperienced “men of the sea”

Should of called a local recovery operator to get you out of the mud before the tide came in.

May I point out that it is not only people from the West Midlands who are guilty of not checking local tides and conditions….. Do people who live in these areas never use the local rescue services????? Yep… thought so!

The main thing is that no-one was hurt or lives lost. But the golden rule when at the sea-shore, especially on the channel,is to take plenty of care as the mud and silt can be extremely hazardous…as they have now found out. Its all about dynamic risk assessment.

Absolutely spot on Westie, no one was hurt. As for the rest thats just common sense, unfortunately these guys seem to have left theirs at home. If they had any to start with. LOL.

I really do hope their Insurance fully covers them for the replacement of the car. It was an understandable mistake to make, and I think I would sue the local authority for the irresponsible lack of signage warning of the danger. Surely vehicles should be banned from such areas of rapid tidal flows.

Are you for real? ‘Lack of signage warning of the danger’? Dosn’t the fact that driving on sand near a great big pool of tidal water give you a clue to the dangers?

My Life, please come on, SUE??? It’s because of people thinking like about claiming and sueing for stupid little things like this that have put our economy in the trouble we’re in!!! It’s called common sense!!! Oh i forgot people don’t have this any more it’s just all about getting money!!

Like I say, I’d sue (to make money to replace my car, to reward me for my inconvenience and to annoy people). I’m so glad to learn your car is a stupid little thing for you to lose. You certainly do have a lot of common sense.

Lack of signage???? we were down at Brean last weekend, parked on the beach with many other cars, signs at the entrance to the beach and also on the beach stating that it is dangerous to WALK on the mud and huge signs informing all not to attempt to drive past the warning markers…. I hope their insurance doesnt cover them, why the hell should everyone else premiums be upped to compensate the stupidity of these people!!!!

Spot on JTB. His sort are a goddam nuisance. You go to the beach for some quiet relaxation, possibly dozing off to the sound of children playing and general conversation, then some prat on a jetski ruins it. Then we have the water skiers with accompanying motor boats.

In the town you get the morons who play car stereos so loud that it shakes you inside the car even with the windows closed. Hopefully they will be stone deaf by the time they are 30 so they won’t have a need for a stereo.

There may not have been a sign but they’d got a brain and some common sense between them hadn’t they? I was on a coastal path they other day and there weren’t any signs there saying no jumping off but I didn’t try! As for you Frank Smith, I hope you were being tongue in cheek with your “they should sue” comment, if not then you should have a word with yourself about being such an idiot. It’s because of people that sue for everything and anything that we ALL pay premiums for insurance and why the country is in such a rubbish state.

Are you mad that there arn’t any signs, that whole area is litteredd with Signage that lets you know about the mud and sand. they are about 100yards apart from Burnham to brean down.

How can they make the beach safer when people either a) ignor the signs b)don’t bother reading them in the first place.

No common sense at all of some people and once they fal foul of their stupidity (not saying this family) they look to blame others.

come on give the town a chance and help your selfs first

Signs only work if one can read, besides, would you like signs on matches that say “Do not have bonfires in your living room” printed on them? That would insult ones intelligence. Oh um, sorry, didn’t think.

Very sad indeed, who,s going to pay I wonder?
I fear insurance company will not pay up.
These things tend to happen everywhere, but
British coastal areas are very prone to these
things, even in my country tides are not this
drastic.I wish the unlucky owners all the best.
