Driver dies after police pursuit

Monday 26th April 2010, 11:30AM BST.

A man died today after being pursued by police in Birmingham. The 23-year-old’s car hit a wall in Fort Parkway, Castle Vale.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Keiley Gartland said: “A police traffic car was following the vehicle at the time of the collision.

“The matter is now being investigated by the force’s professional standards department and will be referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as a matter of course.”

The driver, who has not  been named, crashed at 3.40am in a Seat Leon. He died in hospital.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Chris Kowalik said: “The car was on its side. The fire service, under the supervision of ambulance personnel, helped free the driver from the vehicle.”

The A47 Fort Parkway, near to Fort Shopping Park, remained closed today.
