Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg’s rising stardom showed signs of fading today as a poll following the 90-minute TV clash signalled a David Cameron fightback.
The fresh poll put Mr Cameron ahead by four points on 36 per cent, Mr Clegg on 32 per cent and Gordon Brown trailing on 29 per cent.
Mr Clegg’s poll ratings were well down on last week, when viewers rated him as dominating the debate by a wide margin.
He had endured a tough day with his policies and finances under intense scrutiny as the main parties attacked him and his policies. But despite opening up a five point gap, the Tories acknowledged it would not give them enough seats to form a majority government on May 6.
Labour said Mr Brown won on “substance” while the Tories said Mr Cameron gave a more assured performance.
The Lib Dems said both failed to land a “knockout blow” on Mr Clegg, as the polls still pointed towards a hung parliament.
The Tories stepped up their attack at Labour election leaflets which they said contained “lies” about plans to cut benefits for the elderly.
Shadow chancellor George Osborne said Gordon Brown had “some very serious questions to answer”.

None of them met the subjects head on.
There are only two reasons for all our problems.
Too many immigrants and a too liberal PC and welfare state.
Stop giving the layabouts state handouts and ”compensasion” for having their ”feeling hurt”
Freeze ALL immigration from non EEC counties, except in the most extenuating of circumstances.
Prosecute those whose claims and ”human rights” are deemed to be frivolous by a specially set up tribunal.
All the so-called problems would immediately begin to improve and Britain could start to rebuild.
Try to do it without first tackling the true reasons and the task is virtually impossible.
Personally I think all this pussyfooting about is handing the BNP a veritable swathe of seats across the House of Commons and it serves the whole lot of them right.

I Don’t like the BNP but I can understand people voting for them with their fair britain policies. My only worry would be if they are really genuine, and that has to have big doubts. I know all politicians talk the talk but when they get elected something always stops them walking the walk. I often beleive more goes on behind the scenes in the government than we get to know about, and all the talk about what these parties want to do cannot be really done .
