Plans for homes at rundown pub site
Monday 29th March 2010, 5:59PM BST.
An eyesore pub site in Wolverhampton that has been the target of vandals and arsonists could be transformed with 10 homes under new plans unveiled today.
The Black Horse, in Parkfields, was bulldozed in May 2009, three years after becoming the first pub in the city to have its licence revoked over problems including drug dealing and prostitution.
The demolition sparked fresh hope for the future of the site after an earlier planning application for 20 apartments and four houses was thrown out.
Now new proposals have been submitted to Wolverhampton City Council to build 10 houses there.Long-suffering neighbours living near the former pub in Thompson Avenue have called for action.
Councillor John Rowley said today people were anxious to see the site developed.
He said: “The previous plans for apartments were turned down because they would have filled the site from side to side.
“The neighbours in Thompson Avenue would have been dwarfed – that was mainly why the first application was refused.“
If what has come in now is purely an application for houses I would welcome it.
“The site has been in poor condition for a long time although at least the building has been demolished.”
It became a magnet for troublemakers after was shut down. Before the pub was demolished it was targeted by metal thieves, who stripped lead from its windows and roof. Bosses were also forced to block up the entrances in a bid to stop people getting onto the site.
It emerged in January 2008 that the pub could be knocked down and replaced with housing when it was revealed the cost of repairing damage caused by vandals would run to more than £1.3 million.
