Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Rail line £34billion plan announced
Thursday 11th March 2010, 1:26PM GMT.
The route for a £34 billion high-speed rail line capable of cutting journey times between Birmingham and London to 45 minutes has been announced.
Transport secretary Lord Adonis was publishing the Government’s views on how high speed rail could be extended north of Birmingham to Scotland.
Lord Adonis is expected to announce that 1,100-seater HSR trains will arrive and depart from a new London station, with the route of the line likely to pass through the picturesque Chiltern Hills to Birmingham.
There are two options for stations in the second city – one in the centre near to the site of the historic Curzon Street Station and one close to Birmingham International Airport.
Civic leaders expecting to hear that both stations can be built along with a link taking passengers to New Street station, currently being rebuilt with £600million.
People in Wolverhampton would be able to get to the capital within an hour and 15 minutes by taking a train to Birmingham and changing to a high speed service.
Work would be expected to start around 2017 with the line opening before the end of 2025.
Network Rail chief executive, Iain Coucher, said: “There is now a broad political consensus that Britain must have a high-speed rail future. High-speed is a vital part of a modern, dynamic economy.
“By slashing journey times, high-speed rail can drive economic growth and boost jobs. It would also take cars and lorries off the road, cut domestic flights and release capacity on the existing rail network; transforming services even for those communities not served directly by a high-speed line.
“It is the low-carbon, sustainable transport of the future.”

All well & good getting to places in 45 minutes, I wonder if this is the same 45 minutes Tony Blair talked about prior to the invasion if Iraq?
I think the main problem once the passenger get’s to the end of the line, actually getting to his/her place of destination.
Although I generally welcome such investment in the UK

Unless this continues on to Wolverhampton this will cause the final demise of Wolverhampton and the Black Country. The issue of changing trains and taking as long to travel from Bham to Wton as it will take London to Brum….
Why oh Why does the E & S not wake up and realise their own future is in jeopardy because of ludicrous proposals like this? The real need is the upgrading of the route from Coventry, through (and by-passing) Brum to Wolverhampton. Then reopen the route from Bham Snow Hill to Wton Low Level…. which is the extension of the Chiltern Route.

Estimated journey time from (say) Pendeford Business Park:
Pendeford to Wton: 40 minutes
Walk to Station: 10 minutes
Wton to Bham New St: 30 minutes
New St to Fazeley St: 40 minutes
Fazely St to London: 45 minutes
TOTAL: 185 minutes
i.e. 3 hours and 5 minutes.
The present journey from Wton to London on a direct train (despite it running at only 30 mph) is less.
Why does all the money go to Brum while the rest of the West Midlands is treated as irrelevant?

Well said PJW.

Yes, well said indeed!

About time the transport infrastructure was invested in and good to see the ambition. Good news for a change. I think all the planets would have to line up to get from Wolves to the Smoke in an hour and fifteen though :-)

What are the chances of getting a 120 mile high-speed line between London and Birmingham any time soon when fifteen years down the line (no pun intended) we’re still waiting for 12 miles of Midland Metro to be built between Wednesbury and Brierley Hill?

Just thought I’d mis-heard on central news that it will not be open until 2025! Express & Star confirming this – long time to wait for a train!

A welcome investment in our shocking transport system, but Labour must not hold Wolves SW or they’ll have a Commons majority. Lib Dem, UKIP and Green supporters can safely vote Tory to stop them without Cameron getting his own majority, whereas 80 seats further down the Tory target list in Dudley North voting Tory is too risky. A win there probably secures a Tory Commons majority, so in Dudley North Labour must be supported to stop them.

Crowie, you are correct. This snippet is from the Daily Mail. “But construction would not start until 2017 with trains running from 2025 at the earliest.”
We will all have personal flying cars by that time!!!!!

I’ll believe it when I see it.

Here we go..”It is the low-carbon, sustainable transport of the future.” Alarm bells ringing, anyone? How about this..it’s an election year..ding dong.
As Harry states above, these folks are running before they can even walk. I feel they don’t want to invest in real transport solutions; they just want to make empty promises and jump on the global warming bandwagon.
I’m not sticking around waiting for yet another rust-bucked promise to arrive..and it will be an expensive ride, make no mistake.

HOW DID THEY GET THAT FORD PUMA IN THE FRONT OF THAT TRAIN ?
