Roadworks misery for M6 drivers

Drivers face fresh motorway misery next week with the closure of a stretch of the M6 for three consecutive nights – as transport bosses claim the roadworks are boosting the economy.

The carriageway was shut between Junctions 10 and 11 around Wolverhampton and Walsall from 10pm last night to 8am today causing severe disruptions.

The northbound M6 between Junctions 4 and 6 will shut between 10pm and 6am from Monday to Wednesday for carriageway repairs and installation of traffic sensors.

The work comes at it was revealed that scores of roadwork schemes in the West Midlands have been brought forward to this financial year as part of the Government’s plan to spend its way out of recession.

Critics today said drivers would face unnecessary delays. They said the works served only to worsen disruption at blackspots such as the £12m Burnt Tree Island on the on the Sandwell and Dudley border.

Colin Leighfield, chairman of the transport policy group on the Black Country Chamber of Commerce, called the move “disgraceful”. Chris Kelly, who runs truck dealership Keltruck, said: “It is breathtaking to call this a fiscal stimulus when it just means that more people will be sat in traffic jams where they will waste fuel and money.”

But Transport minister Chris Mole said: “We are committed to bringing forward investment to help stimulate the economy.”

I’m baffled as to how overnight M6 closures between junctions 4-6 and 10-11 are going to cause disruption at the Burnt Tree Island.

Aaah!! Well done! I can’t think of a better way to spend a few million than car park improvements! After all, it IS one of the busiest car parks right…?

Don’t we have an M6 Toll Road that enables people to avoid these jams (at a price, of course)?

Which is a lot of use when your trying to get from Walsall to the M5. The toll road is for people who want to avoid the region completely and they do. The congestion is caused by commuters who have no choice like myself.

These improvements are 15 years over due. Don’t start moaning now.

Why couldn’t they open up the M6 toll for free on those nights? I bet at night they normally have about 4 paying customers & 3 of them didn’t mean to go down the toll road.
I also agree how this road works will have an effect on Burntree Island, especially at night, seems to bit of a stretch

Its a simple supply and demand concept that the toll road bosses can’t seem to grasp for the night time. Reduce it to £1 or less and people will not care that they are paying a toll. They’ll still get there money plus maybe more and everyone is a winner.

Firstly, not very clever to pick a weekend when there is a home game at molineux!
Secondly, would suggest that the powers that be put signs up before the M54 junction so they can avoid wasting peoples time. Thirdly, I recommend diversion signs when they are visible send you to a junction that it open and not just the next one down which is closed!
Thanks for wasting 2 hours of my life on sat night!
