Snow causes airport disruption
Friday 19th February 2010, 6:30AM GMT.
Passengers at one of the UK’s main airports faced disruption today after its runway was shut due to heavy snow.
Bosses at Birmingham Airport said delays and cancellations were likely as aircraft were brought back into position following yesterday’s closure.
The disruption came as a blast of wintry weather brought snow to many parts of the UK, especially Wales and central England where some parts saw several inches settle.
Forecasters said the flurries would largely clear away today, with scattered showers possible over some eastern parts of the country.
Forecaster Gareth Harvey, from MeteoGroup, said: “The snow will gradually move away, but there might be some showers left over through the morning.”
Many drivers also face icy conditions on the roads after temperatures plunged to around freezing overnight.
Birmingham was 0C (32F), Glasgow -1C (30F) and Cardiff 1C (34F) in the early hours.
The Met Office warned of widespread icy roads in many parts of the country, including south west England, north west England, Wales and the west Midlands.
