Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Only two traders at town’s market
Monday 15th February 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
The future looked bleak today for trouble-hit Brownhills Market after just two traders turned up for the second weekend running.
Walsall Council bosses have promised to push for more stallholders to show up at the Silver Street site, where Tuesday markets have already been axed.
One of the two stallholders, Mohammed Sajid, aged 35, from Sparkhill, Birmingham, said he only turned up because regular customers called him in advance to find out where he would be setting up shop.
“They phone me before to find out where I’m going to be,” he said.
“I will carry on coming here, but we do need more traders to start coming.”
Shoppers and traders have said they have lost faith in the future of the town’s market.
Christopher Charley, aged 31, ran a pitch at Brownhills for 12 years, but in recent weeks has moved to Walsall Market after struggling to make ends meet.
Mr Charley, who sells household goods and cosmetics, has said he cannot imagine the market ever returning to its former glory.
Lack of trade will kill it for good, he forecast.

The market organisers should let some of their space out to car booters like they used to before. Everyone loves car boots and the market would become popular again and attract more stall holders.

i always enjoyed going on a tuesday, didnt go for a few years, went again and no market! local people told me it was the counterfeit goods that finished it but there must have been something else, there used to be plenty of stalls there plus the meat lorry.
