Workers move in for end of baths
Tuesday 9th February 2010, 5:00PM GMT.
Condemned Coseley baths entered its final chapter today as contractors appointed to demolish the building moved onto the site.
Residents living near the pool in Pear Tree Lane reported workers from Birmingham-based Coleman & Company were erecting fencing around the building in preparation for bulldozers to move in. The firm confirmed it had been awarded the contract for the work.
The axe has been hanging over the baths since August last year when it closed. Dudley Council claims the roof is unsafe and it would cost millions of pounds to bring the building up to scratch.
Dudley Council confirmed residents’ worst fears. They said it would take three months to clear the site with doors and windows stripped out and asbestos removed before demolition, expected to start in two weeks.
Cabinet member for culture and leisure Councillor David Stanley said: “Taking the decision to close and demolish a facility such as Coseley is never an easy one to reach. Unfortunately, keeping the building open is no longer viable.”

I totally agree, I am ashamed to be in the Dudley borugh. This is a disgrace and a travesty. This will not go down without a massive fight. I may even write to the Daily Telegraph about it.

Completely agree with your comments Mr Stanley but you fail to state that years and years of neglect by your council has resulted in this.

I wonder how many lives have been saved by all the good work and training completed by the Royal Life Saving Society at Coseley , and whether the Cabinet Minister has given any thought to the next generation of children who will not be able to swim let alone save anyone else from drowning?
This will just appear in a drowning statistic figure in ten years or so when a different minister will say….”Mr.Stanley made a poor and ill advised decision”

first brierley hill baths then Coseley baths how long before they close dudley or stourbridge due to lack of investment then we will have to rely on leisure facilities outside the borough

Dudley, Cradley, now Coseley leisure centre. The blame for this lies with council mismanagement. For years they have taken council tax and instead of spending a little each year to keep them going, spend nothing then claim they’ll cost too much to repair. Where does the millions they collect go, besides into councillors pockets and certain “favoured” towns (the ones that vote for this shower)
