New design for Molineux bridge revealed

Striking new images of a £2 million bridge that would stretch across Wolverhampton’s Ring Road and link Molineux with the city centre were today unveiled.

The latest designs for the structure would see it go off in several directions, rising up from Deanery Place over the ring road at St Peter’s where it would then split into two.

One section would come down near the university art building on Molineux Street, and the other near the new home of the city’s archives collection at the Molineux Hotel.

A feasibility study is being carried out into the plans to see whether the idea can get off the ground, with council chiefs looking at different funding options.

Bridgnorth-based Johnson Design Partnership, which is behind the plan, said the latest concept had been drawn up after talks with Wolverhampton City Council, the university and Wolves.

Associate architect Matt Spinks said: “Obviously at certain times of the week there are different numbers of people crossing the road, particularly on match days.

“It is still a concept at the moment and we are developing alternative options.

“There are six options still being looked at with alternative landing positions.

“What we are doing is looking at the levels round the site, the ground conditions as well as highways and planning.”

The original designs featured the bridge as a golden structure which Mr Spinks said was still being considered.

He added: “It all depends on the next stage which would be producing a detailed design and looking into materials.”

Wolverhampton City Council spokesman Tim Clark said a preferred design option for the bridge would be considered next month.

unless it re-establishes North Street/North Road… with vehicular access then it is a waste of money.

This looks fabulous and would really add some life into Wolverhampton and make it look more modern and bring Wolverhampton into the 21st century.

I hope plans can be agreed and started as soon as possible!!

The residents of Wolverhampton dont deserve such a wonderful project, they only vandalise, grafitti and fly-post on stuff. That’s why lonely planet thinks its such a stink hole!

It’s a nice idea, but surely there are other priorities. I’ve lost count of the amount of sites that have been compulsory purchased by the council then left to rot. Why not spend a little money to clear the sites (such as Netto). They could even be used to generate income through car parking, or even grass them and create some open areas.

Monstrosity, i have a better idea……pull the football grounds down im sick of all the problems!!! Ands whos paying?

What an absolutely stupid thing to say. For the sake of 1 match a fortnight the amount of money football grounds generates is entirely justified. There are numerous local business that benefit from football matches and a large number of jobs created. Pubs, restaurants, fast food stalls, merchandising, hotels, travel companies, car parks. Not to mention all the money the council gets from the club.

Wolverhampton wouldn’t be the place it is if it wasn’t for the club in fact most people would never have even heard of it.

I got a better why don’t you sod off to a town without a football club. Dudley maybe.

I know it sound like a waste of money but projects like these improves the look of areas which in turn attracts new business to the area. Not to mention the jobs created for building the bridge.

It also mean most of the football foot traffic will be directed away from the area outside the Jack Harris/Steve bull corner and away from the travelling supporters.

Hopefully the council will work with Wolves’ planned ground improvements so that exits are ideally positioned for the bridge

Please don’t build this, it looks cheap and council like. Wolverhampton has enough cheap flashing lights and silly, tatty bits to it. Use our money to reopen shops, fill pot holes, recruit more police, youth clubs? how about cancer research? How much is it going to cost us to maintain? Do an online questionaire and find out how many ppl actually want a bridge, it would be nice to see the results of that!!

I think its a great idea for the City and it needs something like this to make a statement. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Steve Morgan have said they have money to spend so they should support this design seeing as they didn’t spend a penny in the transfer window!

Wake up Wolverhampton! If we are to have any future and any local pride, let’s stop dwelling on the negative and take a really positive step into the 21st century. This project would be a perfect galvanising force.

Isn’t it amazing how a bridge can evoke such feeling? Why shouldn’t Wolverhampton spend some money on sprucing itself up? I love it when readers complain about ‘taxpayers’ cash’ when most of the time those very readers are happily sitting in their council house, paying next-to-nothing rent and living on state handouts. I work hard, pay plenty of taxes and want to see something for it that’s positive; that makes Wolverhampton a better place; that might lift it out of the doldrums (we currently rank behind Calcutta in the list of best places to live). If we’re constantly attacking every project is it any wonder Wolverhampton is in the sorry state it’s in???

The underpass is dangerous, several students have been mugged/attckaed and its intimidating when you have local “Beggars” asking folk for money. I believe the students have been asking for something to be done about this for years….

If you give me the £2m, i’ll arrange for some security or perhaps for some new lights and cctv cameras instead. You never know it may even pay for a few extra police officers to patrol here at night!

Yawn, Yawn Yawn…It’ll never happen !!!

For example where are the following:

Summer Row Shopping Centre (and the proposed designs show an outdoor shopping centre! Who wants shop in the rain, snow and wind ?!?! )
The New Tesco….dont even go there
    Royal Hospital Site….nor there
    Metro Extension….pipe dream
New Train Station….another 5 or 6 years maybe
Blakenhall Regeneration zone…thats at the bottom of the councils list i bet

Acres of wolverhampton lay and I guarantee, will continue to lay in disarray for years to come but ….Give the city another 30 years and it may get somewhere, what a joke !!!

Please oh please W’ton City Council prove me wrong !!!!

Why not get an artist (or teenager with spray can) paint murals on the inside of the subway… The bridge looks nice. But will it remain open if it’s windy? Let’s face it, the fountain can’t be used in the cold!!! Anyway, it’d be good in the summer. Shame the football season is mainly during the winter.

It will enable student’s to get from north and halls of residence to the south campus and city centre safer than walking under the sub-way which has been plagued with crime in recent years.
