Two hurt as car hits telegraph pole
Monday 8th February 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
Two men were injured when their car veered off the road and hit a telegraph pole before ending up on its roof in a hedge in South Staffordshire.
A man in his 20s had to be airlifted to hospital following the crash in Bridgnorth Road, Pattingham, close to The Fox at Shipley. The other, who is in his 30s, was taken by ambulance to New Cross Hospital.
The men were travelling in a white Honda Integra which left the road and hit a roadside communications unit.
It then ploughed into a hedge, knocking down 20 metres of hedgerow, before hitting a telegraph pole and flipping on to its roof at around 2.45pm yesterday.
Paul Baker, station officer at Tettenhall Fire Station, said: “The car ended up on its roof with two people trapped inside it. It was a very hard extraction from the vehicle due to the position of the car on its roof, which was crushed down.”
The man in his 20s suffered chest, abdominal and upper back injuries, while the man in his 30s injured his shoulder.
Chris Kowalik, West Midlands Ambulance spokesman, said the pair had a lucky escape. “There were two men in the upside-down car both trapped by the damage,” he said.
“The fire service made the area safe, including earthing the telegraph wires which at the time were thought to be touching the car.”
Landlady of The Fox at Shipley Kerry Brummell said the area was an accident blackspot.
“A lot of people came into the pub commenting on what had happened,” she said. “It has always been an accident blackspot and we have a lot of trouble with people speeding, even though speed cameras have been put there.”
Meanwhile a man and a woman were injured in a car crash in Wolverhampton. Firefighters were called to Wednesfield Way, in Heath Town, where two cars had collided yesterday morning. One man suffered a head cut.
Fire crews removed the roof of one of the cars to free a woman who was taken to New Cross suffering from cuts to the face and a suspected spine injury. The crash happened just after 7am.
