A hooded man burst into a busy McDonald’s restaurant and sprayed suspected CS gas in the air – leaving customers short of breath and coughing uncontrollably.

Six ambulances and three fire engines were called to Dudley Street in Wolverhampton city centre after the man ran in and sprayed a mystery chemical.

The branch was evacuated and 18 customers, including children, teenagers and pensioners, who were overcome by the fumes were quarantined inside neighbouring Game store while they were checked by paramedics.

Some complained of a “burning sensation” in their throats which left them struggling to speak while others had tears streaming down their face.

Police were today checking CCTV footage and said there was no evidence to suggest the drama, which happened at 3pm yesterday and closed the restaurant for two hours, was a targeted attack on any particular customers.

Diners told how a man “ran in and sprayed something in the air”, causing the panic.

Ambulance staff set up a temporary medical station in Dudley Street for staff and customers to have their pulse and blood pressure taken, but nobody needed hospital treatment.

Cath and Tony Sankey, from Willenhall, were eating in the restaurant at the time and described the experience as “shocking”.

“I went to get drink and ice cream and found I had a burning sensation in my throat and couldn’t speak to complete my order,” said Mr Sankey, aged 64.

“People were coughing uncontrollably and then a member of staff cleared everybody out and we were told somebody had run in and sprayed something.”

Mrs Sankey, aged 65, added: “I just felt shocked to be honest because you just don’t expect something like that to happen – it was quite frightening.” Scores of shoppers and city centre workers stopped to watch as both McDonald’s and and Game were evacuated.

Onlooker Darren Atkinson, a shop assistant at Phones4U opposite McDonald’s, said: “All these ambulances and fire engines suddenly turned up and people were being rushed out of McDonald’s. It was scary because you’re left wondering if there’s been a bomb scare or if anyone’s been hurt.” Inspector John Smith, of West Midlands Police, said today atmosphere readings were taken in the restaurant and surrounding shops but had revealed nothing about the identity of the mystery gas.

It is believed one explanation is the chemical may have been CS gas but police today played down the incident.

Insp Smith added: “We have checked CCTV footage and there is nothing to suggest this was a deliberate, criminal or malicious attack. The premises were evacuated in line with standard procedures, and investigations are ongoing.”

Everyone exposed to the gas was given advice from paramedics on what to do if their health worsens before being allowed home. The restaurant was open today as normal.

    Common Sense

In what was was the attack not “deliberate, criminal or malicious”?

Did the guy accidentally stumble in and spray the gas?

Is this not assault and so criminal?

Or perhaps the poor lamb was from a broken home and so it clearly couldn’t have been malicious because he was just working through all his “ishoos”.

My word, what chance do we stand when the people we pay to be police are so bloomin’ spineless?

Oh my days. Iv never heard anything so ridiculous in my whole life. No wonder the police have no support from communitys.
Id love to know what the police actually get paid for, it certainly isnt fighting crime!!!!

Errr, how wrong can the police be. CS Gas is dangerous and to spray it into a packed fast food outlet is ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL!!!

Has anyone thought that perhaps the E&S have got this wrong and not the Police? However much you like to jump on your Daily Mail-esque high horse, the Police would not dismiss a gas attack like this which suggests to me that it didn’t happen as reported.

“police today played down the incident.”

Why doesnt that suprise me? Do they do anything useful these days?

It’s ironic that I heard on radio today that there is a new service to report fraud, with a policeman commenting about it. I find this amazing because I remember when I was once a victim of fraud and the police would not even give me a crime number. Was i not a victim of crime?

I’m afraid i find the police a useless service, especially bilston street.

    Paris calling.
I got thoroughly gassed in similar circumstances after someone burst into a Paris club in September (not far from the Eiffel Tower).
After ten washes my clothes still burn me.I spent an agonizing weekend the night after.Locally this is considered as a fairly regular occurence.
I also saw a gang of kids nearby the same month invade a Japanese restaurant nearby to the same at 11pm and rob everything off the customers in about a minute.
Here we are more worried about grenades and machine-gun attacks.
Macdonald’s besides is often a target for anti-American groups like Marks and Spencers before they left France was for anti-Israel groups.
And even the best security staff drop their guard after long hours.

Come on! You can’t expect the police to get too involved in incidents like this. They’ve got enough work to do catching motorists doing 31 in a 30 limit. Let them concentrate on the real criminals!

This attack obviously had serious consequences for those affected. Afterall Mr Sankey had aged 1 year in the space of two paragraphs :-)

This is terrible thing to happen on our streets. The problem we have is you are more likely to be branded a criminal if you drop litter, blow your nose in a traffic jam, feed the birds, protect your home etc. It’s time to pack up and go. This country is finished.

Just another everyday event in Wolverhampton!…still makes a change from the daily murder or shooting….should be twinned with the Bronx though I imagine they may be offended.
I can honestly say i have never been to anywhere where a simple few hours shopping in the city centre is such a frightening experience frequently being accosted for money by beggars,
