Hundreds of would-be police officers in the Midlands are still waiting for jobs despite having passed entrance exams, it emerged today.
West Midlands Police has 240 candidates who have passed all stages of recruitment but have yet to be taken on. Around 500 have also passed initial tests.
The force held its last recruitment event in June but has since put a freeze on recruitment. West Mercia Police said today “a number” of would-be officers were waiting for job offers but was unable to confirm an exact figure.
Forces say roles they had anticipated would need filling have not materialised, partly because of budget cuts and also because fewer officers are leaving due to the recession.
Toby Shergold, spokesman for West Mercia Police, today admitted the force was reviewing all aspects of its operations to see if savings could be made. He said the waiting times had “not really changed”, adding: “All those people who are waiting have been told that we’re going through a review process and will be contacted in the coming months.”
The Metropolitan Police is reported to have recruited 2,000 potential officers in January last year.
The new staff were told they would start training last spring, but despite passing interviews and exams, they have now received letters saying they should “gain life experience” while they wait.

With regard to the sensationalist first paragraph could the E&S please explain to us all how passing an interview and recruitment tests equates to being fully trained? As far as I was aware there was something like 15 weeks residential training plus numerous other local courses and hoops to jump through over the first two years of an officers service before they could claim to be ‘fully trained.’

I must agree very misleading.. they are not even employed yet so they are far from being fully qualified.. If there are no vacanies yet well surely they will have to wait. Load of old twoddle

It’s an expensive game buying them all brand new cars and nice offices………..
Then there is Health and Safety.
Someone has to do the risk assessment before we send these little darlings out into the rough bad world………

I can see why 1. is frustrated having moved from near some shops after having become sick of “YOOFS” hanging around . The E and S is right to highlight the issue but , as has been mentioned, innacurrate in describing these people as fully trained. We do not have a bottomless pit of money to recruit people in to the various services . No job to go to means no job. Personally I think we could do with a lot more traffic police as I see italic number plates, dodgy lights, speeding morons, people texting and driving , the list goes on and on. To avoid me going on and on I’ll leave it there.
