Boxing clever to get GCSE
Tuesday 2nd February 2010, 5:56PM GMT.
A boxing club which was recently granted academy status is now offering children the chance to study a GCSE – in boxing.
Great Wyrley Boxing Club, on Walsall Road, is opening its doors to Year 10 and 11 pupils who want to add a physical edge to their studies.
The 24-week GCSE Boxing course – formally accredited by the ASDAN examining board – guides children through the basic skills of boxing, building up from skipping and stance to punching and jabbing styles. But head coach Pete Hickenbottom, of Cheslyn Hay, said that parents should not be worried about youngsters being put out for the count – because the course is strictly non-contact.
“It as much to do with the social side as it is the actual boxing,” he said.
The course will cost around £5 per week. For further information call Pete on 07957 601424.
