Pool players call for disability overhaul
Wednesday 27th January 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
Members of a pool team are calling for a Staffordshire snooker hall to provide disabled access as a wheelchair-bound player is repeatedly forced to miss games they say.
The Blowers pub team are based at Holly Lane, Cheslyn Hay.
They play about half of their Cannock Chase league games at the Rileys snooker hall in the town centre but the main hall is at the top of a steep flight of stairs, meaning team member Peter Wyke, aged 35, of Cheslyn Hay, who is disabled from the waist down, cannot take part in the games.
He is appealing for the club to take his needs seriously and provide a way for him to take part.
“It saddens me because I can’t take part in the games. So far the best suggestion we’ve had is that people carry me up the stairs, I don’t think it’s a fair solution to the problem” he said.
“What gets to me most is that nobody seems to care about it.”
Team-mate Phil Shotton, an IT manager from Broad Lane, Essington, is leading calls for facilities at the hall to be brought up to scratch and has created a campaign group on social website Facebook.
He said the increasing number of pubs closing had led to even more teams using Rileys – meaning Peter cannot take part.
The 34-year-old added: “We just want somebody to help and take an interest.
“Rileys benefits from league games being held there but nobody seems to want to do anything about the problem. They have a myriad of excuses for why they don’t have to do anything about it but they should want to be doing something to help accommodate Peter.
“Our landlord has raised the issue with the league.”
The Rileys club is also the host venue for the finals of several local tournaments, meaning Peter will not be able to play if he progresses to the latter stages.
Mr Shotton has also written to Chase MP Tony Wright. Staff at the Cannock club declined to comment. Nobody at the firm’s headquarters was available.
