Lights boss standing down
Wednesday 27th January 2010, 5:53PM GMT.
Walsall’s leisure boss has stepped down – less than two weeks after revealing that the town’s famous illuminations were being scrapped forever.
Councillor Barry Sanders, who was criticised for his comments by the council leader, insisted he had resigned his post as cabinet member for leisure and culture to concentrate on his “business activities”.
Councillor Sanders told the Express & Star 12 days ago that there was “no likelihood of the old-style illuminations making a re-appearance”.
But council leader Mike Bird, who will be handling the leisure portfolio until a permanent decision has been made about a replacement, said suggestions the illuminations’ days were numbered was “totally untrue” and “irresponsible”.
A working party will now look at the future of the historic attraction.
Councillor Sanders today said his resignation was not linked to the controversy: “I can assure you it has nothing to do with that at all,” he said. “I am employed as an accountant and have stepped down to concentrate on that.”
Councillor Bird said: “I have accepted Councillor Sanders’ resignation as he is unable to commit the increasing time necessary.”
