Packed lunches hit inspections says MP
Tuesday 26th January 2010, 4:59PM GMT.
Schools are being marked down by Ofsted inspectors because parents are sending their children in with unhealthy packed lunches, a Black Country Labour MP has warned.
Wolverhampton South West’s Rob Marris wants the Government to order Ofsted to stop the “unfair” assessment. Schools minister Diana Johnson said she would raise it with Ofsted chief inspector Christine Gilbert.
She said packed lunches were the responsibility of parents, not the school.
At Commons question time, Mr Marris said: “It is unfair that Ofsted marks down any school where a high proportion of parents choose to send their children to school with unhealthy packed lunches, despite the school’s efforts to educate parents about healthy eating. Will the Government order Ofsted to desist and if not, why not?”
The minister said: “Packed lunches are the responsibility of parents and the majority of parents do provide a balanced packed lunch. But it is the responsibility of parents, not the school.”
Nicholas Sullivan, head at East Park Infants School, Hollington Road, said today he agreed with Mr Marris.
The school was judged “outstanding” and commended for children’s understanding on health.
Mr Sullivan said: “It is ultimately up to the parents to take the lead if schools have made every reasonable effort.” The pupils’ school council decided crisps should be kept at home.
Amarjit Cheema, head at Woodfield Infants School, Penn, said: “I can certainly empathise with any headteachers that have found themselves in this position, although it is not a problem here. We are here to educate children but there will be some who simply will not eat anything but unhealthy foods and we cannot force them to do otherwise.”
Wolverhampton is the first area trialling a scheme offering more free school meals. Families with total income less than £16,040 can apply under the £6 million two-year scheme.

schools need to stop worrying about what kids are eating and start educating them…..mind you anything to take the emphasis off the poor level of teaching these days

What rubbish. to political again, let kids eat what they want to eat. personally if my kids lunchboxs were searched daily i would’nt bother sending them to school again. it goes to show what a communist country this is turning out to be.

Yet again the thought police are out in force. Never mind what school kids eat, ……. in my day teachers taught….. and parents were in charge of what went into our mouths.
Every week it seems that more of our lives are being controlled by tree huggers and social ‘doo gooders’ who are hell bent on imposing their ways on others.

I supposed someone could remind Rob Marris that it was his party’s government that unleashed all these food fascists upon our schools in the first place, with its OFSTED target fetishes and its five-a-day officers poking inside kids’ lunchboxes.

Mr Rob Marris MP, Ofsted should be more concerned about what goes into childrens minds than what goes into their stomachs ! Does he expect the schools to do a daily check of every lunch box that enters their school , it’s ridiculous. Next they will be telling the parents what to feed them when they get home from school. The government and schools need to get the childrens education up to standard before they start lecturing parents or children on what they should be eating !

Has anyone (particularly BB) actually read the article?
I’m no fan of Mr Marris but… “Wolverhampton South West’s Rob Marris wants the Government to order Ofsted to STOP the “unfair” assessment”u and the head of ofsted AGREES
Get off your high horses people!
Heaven forbid we should want our children to have a healthy diet!

Sorry, I meant the Education Minister agrees not Ofsted, I was to busy laughing about the comments about “communism”, “fascism” and the “thought police”.

Let kids be kids again, I’m so fed up of this nanny state telling us what we can and cannot do, what is it with this weird fanatical obsession with controls around children?

Surely when a child is at school then the school have a responsibillity to look after them?
If a parent sends their child to school with a pack of crisps as their only food for the entire day, day after day, should the school just ignore this and watch as the child’s health deteriorates?

Ste P what about the children who’s lunchboxes are the size of adult suitcases and as a result the child is 3 times the size of everyone else in the class?
Maybe the school should act responsibly and begin to starve this child in order to look after them?

To be honest Timmy, from personal experience, that’s not something you see that often! Childhood obesity is mostly caused by a diet of junk food, not over eating.
I don’t agree that OFSTED should police what’s in children’s lunchboxes, and I don’t think that childrens packed lunches should be scrutinized and forced to be super-healthy. However, I think that the ‘let kids do what they want attitude’ isn’t helpful.
Unfortunately, it is a sad fact that there are some parents around that have no understanding of basic nutrition. The school has a duty to look after children whilst they are at school. So if it is noticed that a child’s health is being affected by what they are, or are not, given to eat then the school should step in.
