Rubbish collections failure ‘a disgrace’

Homes in a Black Country street have been without rubbish collections for three weeks – with refuse last picked up on December 30.

People in Spring Street, Ocker Hill, Tipton, have rubbish bags piling up outside their homes.

Residents said that, despite continuous calls to Sandwell Council, bags are still to be collected. Gillan Baker-Sherman, aged, 60 said “This an absolute disgrace. Of course we understand that there have been issues because of the ice and snow, but it has been gone for a week now.

“Even before that our road is one that had been gritted. It isn’t a hard-to-get-to back street.

“There are three people in my household, myself, my husband and son. The lady next door to me has two children, aged 10 and four, and the rubbish that is building up is a real health hazard.

“It is disgraceful that it is getting towards the end of January and we are still waiting to have our rubbish collected in 2010.

“I have made numerous complaints, but not one person from the council has called me back or made any attempt to sort this out as far as we can see.”

Last week binmen fought their way through “treacherous” conditions to remove weeks’ worth of rubbish.

Sandwell side streets were without collections during the recent cold snap as lorries were unable to negotiate the icy streets. Sandwell Council promised that streets would be cleared by the end of last week.

Sandwell Council neighbourhoods chief, Councillor Mahboob Hussain said: “I will look into this immediately and find out what has happened.”

“LAST WEEK BINMEN FOUGHT THEIR WAY THROUGH “TREACHEROUS” CONDITIONS TO REMOVE WEEKS’ WORTH OF RUBBISH”

“SANDWELL SIDE STREETS WERE WITHOUT COLLECTIONS DURING THE RECENT COLD SNAP AS LORRIES WERE UNABLE TO NEGOTIATE THE ICY STREETS. SANDWELL COUNCIL PROMISED THAT STREETS WOULD BE CLEARED BY THE END OF LAST WEEK”

How courageous these people were!! They were obviously living in far worse conditions than the rest of us in the borough, after all the they couldn’t take the rubbish away but our postman was delivering our mail everyday, our Dairycrest milkman never missed a delivery, my wife went into her school job every day and I didn’t hear of the local superstores running out of products because their massive lorries couldn’t make their deliveries, the sooner the refuse collections are put into the hands of private contractors the better.

Message to SANDWELL COUNCIL NEIGHBOURHOODS CHIEF, COUNCILLOR MAHBOOB HUSSAIN council, if your vehicles can’t drive round the borough to do their job how about this for a radical idea, clear and grit the roads!!!!!

Before we hear the howls of anguish and the lamenting cries that the council cant afford to grit all the roads in the borough because it would cost too much, here is my answer to that argument see below!!

    TAXPAYERS TOP UP COUNCILLORS’ PENSIONS
Taxpayers are paying into pensions for councillors across the region, the Express & Star can reveal.
Elected politicians at town halls are taking advantage of a special pension scheme to give them handouts after they retire.

The pensions, which were set up by the Government and started in 2003, are funded by taxpayers and are handed out on top of any pensions they might have for full-time jobs. There are 119 councillors across the region in the scheme, including Birmingham City Council which tops the league with 48.
Sandwell is second place with 21.

The Taxpayers Alliance has criticised the councillors as “careerists” who are trying to retire with public sector pensions from roles that are essentially voluntary.

Mark Wallace, from the Taxpayers Alliance, said: “I don’t think it is justified for any councillor to be taking out a pension at our expense.

These people are supposed to be public servants, not careerists with pensions the envy of the private sector. It’s a disgrace.”

I pay my Council tax to Sandwell Council to have my roads kept usuable, I didn’t pat it to enhance the lives of part time councilors.

Great idea Graham!! I bet it would be cleared from the town hall in less than an hour. I wonder if the councilors rubbish is lying uncollected outside their houses, it would be interesting to find out.

The council are not really bothered when you ring, you just get fobbed off with “as soon as they can get to you they will collect it” The Snow and Ice were still on the ground – the post was still arriving, buses still running, and even the lamp post litter bins were getting collected by Sandwell MBC, how strange that the normal refuse couldn’t?! Are there any jobs in refuse ‘cos I think I want one seems pretty cushy.
I understand the roads were bad but others were out in them. My street was piled with rubbish for a fortnight and they just dumped the bags on the footpath so no one could even walk past unless you walked in the so called too “dangerous roads” Ok for joe public to risk his/her life though!

Stop moaning, the place is a dump anyway.
If you choose to live there you get what you deserve.
Speak to your local Councillor you pay THEM enough, make them earn their money.
