Homes plan for historic printing site

A multi-million pound new housing development built on the site of an historic Black Country printing factory is almost complete.

Fifty homes have replaced the old Walsall Lithographic Company off Wednesbury Road in Walsall, the last of which will be finished by October.

Part of the building, which stood on the site for 112 years, was demolished to make way for the £4 million Bromford Housing Group project.

Construction has involved the demolition of outbuildings at the printers, which supplied stamps to Royal Mail, and the conversion of the main factory building to create 40 homes.

The second phase involved refurbishment of the former labour exchange building next door to convert it into 10 residential properties.

All 50 homes which face Midland Road will be up for rent. Bromford’s development manager Joanne Noakes said: “Both phases at Midland Road are proving to be a real success.

“In total we will have completed 50 units for affordable rent. The final homes are due to be completed and customers moved in by the end of October 2010.”

The Wolverhampton-based housing group has worked with house builder Kendrick Construction on the redevelopment.
