Employers need to give graduates a chance
Tuesday 28th September 2010, 9:00AM BST.
As early as January this year I read a report of a survey which revealed that fewer employers are willing to hire recent graduates.
And the several months that I have spent job-seeking since have proven to me that employer’s views are yet to change writes job-seeking blogger Ioana Lazarov.
The lack of concern over the future of thousands of graduates seems to stem from a general misconception surrounding the ability level of those of us who are straight out of university.
To make matters worse, the UK Graduate Careers Survey 2010 states that “only a third of the ‘Class of 2010’ expect to find a graduate job after university.”
Depressing statistics like these only increase the numbers of graduates losing confidence in the value of the degrees that they have both earned and paid for.
These success rates are significantly lower for Psychology graduates like myself – the British Psychological Society estimates that only 15-20 per cent of graduates will be working in mental health as professional psychologists.
However, if years of education and investment in a degree become obsolete in the eyes of employers, is it really necessary to begin this journey in the first place?
For career fields such as psychology, which require academic training towards progression towards a chartered status, if one is willing to invest the time, effort and finance in such a pursuit, shouldn’t there be a programme set that would help them to gain a job afterwards?
Surely it is of benefit to society to make the most of the skills that we have acquired.
At the very least, a Government intervention urging employers to give all graduates a chance in exchange for certain incentives and an entry level salary could be a welcome solution.
I try to remain resilient in the face of adversity.
However, until better times come my way, I’ll just be happy if my credit card supports me through one of my toughest and most austere times.
