Year-long roadworks to start on busy route
Saturday 25th September 2010, 11:29AM BST.
A year-long roadworks scheme, meaning lane closures on one of the busiest routes between the Black Country and Birmingham, is set to start next week.
The closures are being put in place as part of £5 million improvement works to the junction of the A4123 Wolverhampton Road and A456 Hagley Road West, Warley.
The Wolverhampton Road junction of the Hagley Road, used by thousands of motorists every day, will be overhauled in a bid to cut traffic congestion and reduce journey times.
The work will include road widening and extending an existing bus lane.
The improvements are the latest phase of a £13 million scheme to improve the Hagley Road and will start next Friday, lasting until October next year.
Round-the-clock lane closures will be in place throughout the works, leading to fears of tailbacks on the A4123, the main route connecting Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
Sandwell neighbourhoods chief, Councillor Derek Rowley, said: “I am pleased that work is starting on this scheme because it will improve traffic flows and reduce dangers at this very busy junction.
“The work includes the ‘Hagley Road Bus Showcase’ scheme which is being implemented as part of a joint scheme by Birmingham and Sandwell councils.”
