Vauxhall start a new price war with Zafira
Tuesday 27th September 2011, 9:00AM BST.
Vauxhall has started a people-moving price war with its main rival Ford.
The entry-level version of the new Vauxhall Zafira Tourer will undercut the price of its main rival, the Ford SMax, by £1,200.
Despite the cost-cutting, the 138bhp Zafira Tourer ES 1.8 will come equipped with an excellent range of kit as standard, including air conditioning, DAB radio, cruise control, MP3 connections, six airbags, a seven-speaker sound system, active headrests and the handy Flex7 seating found in the smaller Zafira.
Longer, wider and more expensive than the Zafira, the Zafira Tourer is designed to be Vauxhall’s premier peoplemover, with higher levels of luxury, space and equipment.
It uses key components from the Insignia, which seem to include the basic chassis layout.
The Insignia’s platform is a large one, so it’s no surprise that the Zafira Tourer is described by Vauxhall as “overwhelmingly airy” inside. On the outside, it’s 19cm longer than a standard Zafira.
More emphasis is being placed on safety in the Tourer, with a plethora of driver-assist systems making a first appearance in the new model.
Traffic sign recognition, side blind spot alert and advance park assist – which helps drivers find an adequate parking space and guides them in to it – are among the potential highlights, but they are likely to be extra options.
There will be 1.8-litre and turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engines, alongside a 2.0-litre diesel engine with three different power outputs.
One of the diesels is an EcoFlex version that emits 119g/km of CO2, reducing running costs.
