Car makers are leading the recovery

Car manufacturing rose by 10.7 per cent in August, figures revealed today, suggesting the industry is at the forefront of a manufacturing-led recovery.
Production for the first eight months of this year is up 4.4 per cent on the same period last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
The 10.7 per cent rise is compared to the same month last year. UK engine production also rose 14.4 per cent in August. The West Midlands is on the way to becoming an automotive engine powerhouse for the UK.
Thousands of Mini and BMW engines are already made at the Hams Hall plant, where around 1,000 people work, east of Birmingham. And Jaguar Land Rover announced this week its plans for a new engine factory on the i54 site in Wolverhampton, creating 750 jobs.
