The Land Rover is set to give its iconic Defender a dramatic revamp – more than 60 years after the launch of the original model.
The West Midlands firm will unveil the futuristic DC100 concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month – and it could form the basis for the replacement of the much-loved but ageing Defender.
Launched in 1948 the original Land Rover went on to cement the company’s reputation for making some of the most rugged and versatile off-road vehicles in the world due to its off-road and towing abilities and durability.
Land Rover is planning to begin production of the next-generation Defender in 2015, 67 years after the original was unveiled.
Land Rover bosses will be keenly assessing reactions to the DC100 concept at Frankfurt before deciding how radical the new Defender should be.
Gerry McGovern, director of design for Land Rover, said: “The DC100 isn’t a production-ready concept, but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century.”
