Trio work on Morgan electric concept car
Tuesday 23rd August 2011, 12:08PM BST.
Morgan is best known for its traditional sports cars but now the Worcestershire manufacturer is heading a consortium of technology specialists to develop a ground-breaking, high performance electric model.
The Morgan +E programme aims to deliver two engineering concept vehicles early in 2012.
The vehicles will be based on the Malvern company’s £120,000 Aero SuperSports and will draw on the experience of regional experts like electric drivetrain pioneers Zytek, based in Lichfield, and Radshape, of Birmingham, which specialises in high-precision sheet metal components and assembly.
Instead of the SuperSports’ 4.8 litre BMW V8 petrol power plant, the concept cars will feature a new derivative of Zytek’s high power-density electric engine.
The collaborative research and development project is being part-funded by a £100,000 grant from the Niche Vehicle Network CR&D Programme, which promotes the development and application of new technology to take advantage of the increasing market opportunities for lower carbon vehicles.
