MG’s back on track in team deal at Le Mans
Wednesday 27th July 2011, 9:30AM BST.
The MG name is set to return to one of the most famous races in the world – the Le Mans 24-hour, it was announced today. A deal was being revealed at Longbridge.
Motor racing team RLR is behind the move which will involve the MG name appearing on RLR’s MG Lola EX265 sports car in the European Le Mans Series of six-hour endurance races.
MG spokesman Doug Wallace said the company would also provide some technical back-up from its MG Birmingham operation at Longbridge with the aim of helping Bolton-based RLR qualify for the 24-hour race next year.
Around 400 people now work at the Longbridge site, some producing the new MG6 saloon but most involved in research and development work on new models. “We see this as MG’s return to international motorsport and to the most famous race in the world,” said Mr Wallace.
The MG Lola car stems from the original MG Rover’s involvement in endurance racing in the years before the business went bust, in 2005.
