Ford drops CDs as Focus turns to iPods
Tuesday 26th July 2011, 11:57AM BST.
They were once the height of sophistication, but CD players in cars are going to become a thing of the past.
Ford, one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world, is going to do away with CD players in its cars and instead wants drivers to download their music to an iPod or another digital device such as a USB memory stick, the modern equivalent of an old computer floppy disk.
The new Ford Focus dashboard will have a socket which will allow drivers to connect their iPods or other digital music players.
Ford may also make it unnecessary to even physically connect a player to the car as new models will be able to “stream” music from the internet while driving along.
The new cars will have a so-called Sync “infotainment hub”, which includes a socket to plug in a mobile broadband connection, turning the car into a wireless internet, or wi-fi, hotspot.
