Rolls-Royce to display electric powered car at show
Tuesday 22nd February 2011, 10:00AM GMT.
Rolls-Royce will showcase a one-off, fully electric powered Phantom at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.
The 102 EX prototype will be taken on a global tour during 2011 and will serve as a test bed to gather potential customers’ thoughts on the prospect of introducing alternative power to Rolls-Royce cars of the future.
The Goodwood firm’s chief executive, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, said: “We have engineered the world’s first battery electric
vehicle for the ultraluxury segment.
“With this vehicle, we begin an exploration into alternative drive-trains, seeking
clarity on which alternative technologies may be suitable to drive Rolls-Royce motor cars of the future.”
The 102EX will serve as a working test bed for a global tour that takes in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America.
Existing owners will be able to test the car and feed back their experiences, thoughts and concerns directly to Rolls-Royce.
While there are no plans to develop a production version, the car will serve to begin a dialogue with existing owners
and the firm.
These include the car’s ability to deliver an acceptable range between re-charges and to operate in extreme weather conditions.
Rolls-Royce will also benchmark the reliability and quality of the alternative powertrain.
