Bomb-proof luxury Jaguar for David Cameron
Wednesday 16th February 2011, 1:41PM GMT.
Prime Minister David Cameron ought to travel safely in his latest car – an armoured Jaguar with bomb-proof doors.
The country’s leader has taken delivery of a specially-modified Jaguar XJ Sentinel for his official engagements.
It has bullet-proof glass, bomb-proof doors and armour plating beneath the floor to protect against grenade blasts. It is designed to give high levels of security protection with a discreet look and even comes with its own security consultant.
The XJ Sentinel, launched at the Moscow Motor Show last year, is a favourite with Russian businessmen.
It is built with specialised high strength steels with Kevlar backing. Its armoured inner cell was engineered in partnership with vehicle armouringspecialist Centigon.
The Sentinel is based on the long wheelbase XJ saloon and is powered by a five litre V8 petrol engine paired with a six speed automatic transmission.
Although the car, at 3.3 tonnes is nearly double the weight of a standard XJ, its sophisticated powertrain enables it to reach 60mph in 9.4 seconds. Its top speed is 121mph. Suspension and steering have been specially tuned to cope with extra weight while retaining the poise and agility found in the standard XJ.
The interior is elegantly finished with top quality leather and wood veneer trim and Mr Cameron will be able to stretch out in the back seat on his way to and from official engagements as there is nearly three and a half feet of legroom in the back.
Despite its extra weight, the Sentinel can comfortably accommodate four occupants along with their luggage and additional security equipment.
It is understood the car was delivered to Downing Street staff last week and it will replace Mr Cameron’s previous official car, which was also a Jaguar XJ.
