Car Insurance: Getting the Right Cover for Your Vehicle

Commercial feature – Arranging the right cover for your vehicle is of utmost importance.

Whether you are in need of motorcycle insurance for your motorcycle or car insurance for your car, you have to ensure that you’re protected when you take to Britain’s roads. Acquiring this protection can cost you a significant amount of money but this shouldn’t stop you from getting the comprehensive protection you need, and you can be safe in the knowledge that by shopping around online you can get the best deal possible.

Just as you would research your home insurance online, when you want to compare van insurance or car insurance there are many different features you’ll need to choose from. When deciding on your policy this choice might be slightly overwhelming, especially if you’re not fully aware of all the different protection features that are available. So, the first thing for you to do before looking through different policies is to get your head around the different features and the car insurance terminology that is used.

The first decision you’ll have to make is what level of car insurance to go for, given that there are three basic levels to choose from. The first of these, and the most basic, is third party car insurance. This policy type only provides drivers with the cover that is required by law, which means that you’re protected from claims made against you in the event you’re involved in an accident. It will only cover damage to the car of the third party involved in the accident, not yours. As this level of cover is very basic, it is ideal if you are not a regular motorist and only use your vehicle from time to time.

Third party, fire and theft car insurance also includes some additional features and as the name suggests, will cover costs to your vehicle if it is damaged in a fire or stolen. However, this level of cover still doesn’t pay for damage to your own car when you’re involved in an accident. If you are after this level of protection, then you’ll need to look at policies offering comprehensive cover.

Comprehensive car insurance is the most wide-ranging cover available and will protect you and your car if you’re involved in an accident. There are usually additional features depending on the particular policy, some of which you may or may not want. Therefore it is important to look through each and every feature that you can add to most car insurance policies and select the ones that you feel you need.

One feature you may be after is car insurance for multiple motorists on one policy. Adding further drivers to your insurance document is likely to push the premium up, but it should also work out cheaper than purchasing multiple car insurance policies. If one of your children is learning to drive and you want to put them on your policy, the premium will increase as drivers under the age of 21 are considered to be high risk by insurers. If you do want another motorist on your policy, one thing you must ensure is that your no claims discount will not be affected if they’re involved in an accident.

Your no claims discount can help to keep your car insurance premium down and risking it is not something you’ll want to do. It is well worth shopping around online for car insurance quotes that allow you to add another driver without putting your no-claims discount at risk; otherwise it may be worth looking into getting a brand new policy for each new driver you want to add.

If your job involves driving outside of the UK then another feature you’ll want to include in your policy is European car insurance. This will ensure that you’re covered when you’re driving on the continent and this isn’t included in many standard policies, thus being seen as an additional extra. You may well be limited in the number of days you’re insured for in Europe, while breakdown cover and legal protection are also essential aspects for ensuring you’re fully covered if you’re involved in an accident abroad.

Getting cover abroad is something that will push the price of your car insurance up, just as driving a high number of miles each year will. If your car has a high mileage due to work commitments then there is little you can do, but if you can cut back on the amount of driving you do, you should be able to bring the cost of your policy down.

There are plenty of other things you can do to ensure your car insurance quote is as cheap as possible; one being keeping your car in the garage rather than parking it on the street. So, if your garage is currently full of junk and there’s no space for your vehicle, then it may be worth having a clearout so that your premium isn’t higher than it needs to be.

Where the car is kept will affect your premium, as will the type of vehicle you drive. More expensive vehicles will be subject to a higher premium owing to the cost of repairing the vehicle if it is involved in an accident. Whatever vehicle you own, fitting a security device, such as an immobiliser that’s present in most modern cars, will help to knock some pounds off your car insurance premium.

The final thing you may wish to consider is paying a higher excess. This will cut the cost of your car insurance, but your premium won’t reduce at an equal proportion to the extra excess you decide to pay. Also, this will mean that if you are involved in an accident you will have to pay a greater contribution towards the costs of the repair.

These are just some of the things you have to take into account when choosing car insurance. By making sure that you only get those features that you really need and by shopping around online, not only will you get cheap car insurance, but you’ll also get the right cover for you.
