Classic Mini still tough to beat after 45 years
Tuesday 19th October 2010, 12:51PM BST.
Clive King’s Mini may be 45 years old – but it’s still good enough to take on all-comers in the field of historic rallying.
The grey 1965 Cooper S has just helped 52-year-old King take this year’s Mini Cup, run by the Historic Rally Car Register.
King, from Sedgley, and co-driver Bob Ward, from Oldbury, had to be on their game at the Cambrian Rally in North Wales in order to take the points they needed to win the Historic Rally Car Register trophy.
“We’ve probably been the quickest car all year,” said King. “But we’ve had two rallies where we did not finish and it’s no good being the quickest if you don’t finish.”
And when push came to shove in the forests of North Wales, the 1,291cc Cooper did not let them down. Mini specialist King bought the Cooper S as a ‘rotten shell’ for £500 and spent two years restoring it.
He has now been rallying it for 16 years – and it’s still going strong: “I drive it very, very hard but it just keeps going and it certainly doesn’t owe me anything.”
The Cooper will now receive some TLC over the winter to prepare it for the 2011 season. King is also looking to fit a more powerful 1,380cc engine.
“It’s one thing to win a title – defending it is even harder.”
The duo will receive their trophies at a HRCR dinner in the New Year.
Meanwhile, fellow Wolverhampton and South Staffs club member Guy Weaver is celebrating a treble success this season with rally driver David Stokes.
Having already been crowned the MSAs British Historic Rally champions, Stokes and co-driver Weaver, added the Welsh Historic Championship at the weekend.
They repeated their success on tarmac too, meaning a total of three titles for the experienced duo for 2010.
