Land rover sales up 50 per cent
Tuesday 6th July 2010, 11:00AM BST.
Land Rover sales soared by almost 50 per cent as the West Midlands-based firm continues to spearhead the car industry’s recovery from recession.
It sold 3,068 cars last month, an increase of 46 per cent on last year, according to figures published which showed an encouraging boost in demand for new cars in the UK.
Registrations were up 10.8 per cent last month.
But it was Gaydon-based Land Rover which employs 9,500 workers at its plants in the West Midlands and on Merseyside and supports a further 40,000 jobs in its supply chain, which enjoyed the biggest jump.
It recently announced plans to recruit 1,000 staff to meet anticipated demand for its eagerly-anticipated ‘baby Range Rover’, the Evoque, which was unveiled by Victoria Beckham last week.
Debut
The new car will make its public debut at the Paris Car Show in September before going on sale in the summer of 2011.
Sales of Land Rover’s sister firm Jaguar, however, dipped slightly by two per cent in June and are down by six per cent year to date.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: “The new car market continued to perform above expectations in June, with fleet sector registrations up 25 per cent compared to this time last year.
The results indicate improved business confidence and a strengthening economic recovery. Car sales in the UK are up by 20 per cent this year so far, but the industry has warned of a slowdown in demand.
