Range Rover to announce ‘baby’ news
Thursday 1st July 2010, 12:28PM BST.
All the speculation surrounding the new “baby” Range Rover will be answered later today when the vehicle is unveiled.
The LRX concept first saw the light of day at the Detroit show several years ago and excited the Land Rover-loving masses.
Soon the wait will finally be over as the wraps finally come off production version of the company’s new small Range Rover model, which is expected to closely resemble the original concept.
The unveiling will be held tonight in London, where the new model will be part of a celebrity-packed Range Rover 40th Birthday Party put on by Vogue magazine at the Orangery, Kensington Palace.
Recent spy photos indicate that it has grown two doors since the concept phase, which was an expected move.
But despite the change, those same photos seem to indicate the proportions and basic design of the LRX will remain. A two-door could also be part of the mix.
The birth of the Range Rover started in 1967 when young apprentice Roger Crathorne was plucked from Land Rover’s factory floor to begin work on ‘a new project’.
He was to become part of the small team responsible for developing a ground-breaking vehicle which would serve the firm outstandingly well for the next four decades.
The Range Rover and it was an instant hit following its launch in June, 1970.
Very nearly one million examples have been sold since then and Land Rover’s flagship shows no sign of relinquishing its place as the ultimate leisure vehicle for the well-off.
The car’s development team, led by Spencer ‘Spen’ King, who sadly passed away last weekend, initially conceived it as a more luxurious version of the basic Land Rover.
Roger, who still works for Land Rover as the firm’s technical communications manager, says the team instinctively realised the car they were developing would be a success, much as record producers ‘know’ when they are working on a future hit.
“We just knew it was going to work,” he said.
