Used cars: Peugeot 308
Tuesday 22nd June 2010, 11:00AM BST.
In 2007 Peugeot unveiled the successor to the 307 – the 308 family hatch.
The new car came with a wide choice of petrol and diesel engines at launch, plus a good level of standard equipment.
Both three and fivedoor models were offered, along with a good choice of affordable optional extras.
The SW estate model, plus a folding metal roof convertible, followed.
Engines Peugeot has been working hard on its engines in recent years, and the end result is an impressive lineup of both petrol and diesel motors.
For long distances the latter makes the most sense, and are refined and frugal in equal measure.
Petrol motors are quieter still, and the recent batch of turbo units are also quite racy.
Exterior
A welcome evolution from the less than exciting 307, the 308 is more in line with Peugeot’s current upmarket aspirations.
Better proportions plus easier on the eye styling have lead to a handsome hatchback for the masses.
Interior
Along with the engine improvements, Peugeot has done wonders with the 308’s cabin.
Full of solidly built, high quality materials, the accommodating cabin is right up there with the best the Germans can muster.
Driving
Keen to recover some lost ground in the past, Peugeot has done a stellar job of sharpening up the 308’s handling and ride characteristics.
Now a more enjoyable and engaging car to drive, it’s also impressively refined at all speeds.
Willing engines, good brakes and steering plus a comfortable driving position all add their bit to the mix.
Ownership
There’s a lot of choice out in the family hatch sector, but choose your 308 model wisely and you’re unlikely to loose your shirt.
Most cars should be well equipped, while day-to-day running is not going to ruin you financially.
If you rack the miles a diesel is a must, however.
And high miles or not, Peugeot quality control has improved enormously in recent years.
What to look for
The 308 might still be a reasonably new car, but there’s always the chance of something being not quite right.
A full service history is a must, as is a blemish-free and fully functioning interior.
Kerbed wheels and parking dents shouldn’t be tolerated as there’s plenty of choice on the forecourt.
And don’t forget the test drive, as it could show up some hidden problems under the bonnet.
