Six of the best alternative transport systems
Thursday 22nd September 2011, 12:10PM BST.
Around the world on September 22, World Carfree Day takes place.
Now in its 11th year, the aim is to get people out of their cars and take an alternative method of transport for the day.
In essence, it is all about being greener, but it is also as an opportunity to have some fun on your way to work.
Just remember to wave at all those who notice you, it may be the trigger they need to have a go themselves.
Spring Steps – Tramp-It Jump Shoes – from £99.99 at www.firebox.com
Slip on a set of these and you’re sure to get a workout as you speed past fellow pavement users. The movement is given by a single, super-strengthened strip at the base, which responds with a greater force than that with which you step down. And hey presto, you’ll soon be mimicking the gravity-defying leaps of a kangaroo!
Push Yourself – Skatecycle – £149.99 from www.firebox.com
Hailed as the “world’s first self-propelled hubless skate”, the Skatecycle is in a class of its own. So, how does it work? Slot your feet into the space where the hubs usually are, steady yourself on the plates inside, and then begin to move and weave yourself along the ground. This motion allows you to propel yourself until you run out of steam.
Wheel Away – Micro Kickboard Monster Scooter – £149.95 at www.micro-scooters.co.uk
There has been a marked increase in adults using scooters to get around. While there are more serious scooters in the grown-up range from Micro, we’ve selected this one for its single handle steering system and wide wheels that stick like glue to the ground, so you’re sure to keep your street cred intact.
Boardroom – Loaded Dervish Bamboo Longboard – £254.99 from www.surfdome.com
Leave skateboards to the younger generation, they’re trickier to handle and feel just a bit too fast and furious for this round-up of travel systems. Instead, move around in style on this uber-cool Longboard that’s made to the highest specifications and is much easier to balance on than those other pesky pavement botherers.
Side Swipe – Trikke T12 – £539.95 from www.trikkeuk.co.uk
This three-wheeler caught our eye with its first-class specification list. When you jump on board, it’s your own motion that gets you moving, while the high-pressure pneumatic tyres and disc brakes take you along almost any surface with ease. This gadget is superb for combining an exciting ride with training for balance and strength.
Skates On – LandRoller Skates – From £124.49 at www.sportconde.com
These inline skate-like shoes are designed to give the wearer more stability and make it easier for amateur and recreational riders to perform cool moves. The added benefit of the large, angled wheels means, of course, it takes less effort to get from A to B.
