‘Gary Barlow’ – my perfect weekend
Friday 24th June 2011, 12:32PM BST.
Okay so it’s not quite 90,000 fans in two days but for tribute act Take That 2, there’s still never a dull moment as they tour the country in their battered old van playing to hundreds of fans each week. ‘Gary’ aka Chez Gibson tells us how a night in with the family would make a perfect weekend . . .
It’s Friday afternoon. What’s on your mind?
Gigs. We play every weekend so I’ll be planning for that night’s concert. It could be anywhere in the UK, from Glasgow to Southampton and all points in between.
Who normally has the pleasure of your company at the weekend?
The boys: Robbie, Howard, Mark and Jason – and a few hundred fans. There’s a gig every Friday and Saturday, so I rarely get to spend time at home.
How do you prepare for a big night out?
I don’t. These days, a big night out is a good night in. The best night out would be a night in with the family.
What’s your favourite party outfit?
My pyjamas, so that I can sit on the sofa with the kids and watch TV. If I’m out, I’ll be dressed smartly in shirt, suit and tie. My clothes tend to be the same as Gary Barlow’s. My hair is also likely to be the same. When you do this job, you have to accept that another person’s life will take over your own.
What is your favourite nightspot and why?
Anywhere in Sheffield. I’m from the city and used to DJ in the rock clubs. If I’m in ‘Gary mode’, then I’d say anywhere in Manchester, they go mad for him there.
What tune always gets you on the dancefloor?
Most Take That tunes get the fans going, which is good enough for me. At the moment, the favourite song is Love Love.
It’s a sunny Saturday. What are you up to?
I’m travelling to another show with the rest of the lads in the back of the van. You should see it – it’s a mess. When you’re on the road as much as us, the van tends to become your home. We’ll all be plugged into our iPods or iPads, watching films or listening to music.
What’s the recipe for a perfect night in?
Me and my family watching TV.
Favourite DVD? And what would you eat while watching it?
The Sure Thing and I’d be eating dry roasted peanuts.
Sunday lunch – home-cooked or down the pub?
Got to be a roast, mate, at home. Yorkshire puddings – can’t beat ‘em.
Where and how do you like to relax?
With the family, at home. Or in the garden. If it’s sunny, we might have a barbecue on the patio.
Sunday breakfast – cooked or continental?
I don’t have breakfast. By the time I crawl out of bed, it’s time for lunch.
You’ve got a whole weekend off and a wad of money in your back pocket – which country or city would you head to?
I’d be off to Monte Carlo to race cars. Put me in something fast, like a Lamborghini, that’s my idea of heaven: we all have our dreams.
