Reader recommends – Cinemas

Every week, we’ll be looking for your recommendations of the best places to eat, drink and enjoy yourselves across the Black Country.

This week, we asked our Twitter and Facebook followers to name the best cinemas in the region. Here are the destinations that they chose:

Light House, Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton’s arts council-funded Light House – which also offers exhibitions and live music – was a popular choice amongst our readers.

Amongst its many recommendations, Andrew Baker said “Comfy seating, its own bar, a selection of the World’s best films, not just Hollywood mediocrity – it has to be the Light House.”

And many other readers praised the relaxed attitude to letting movie-goers enjoy a drink in their seat and the range of other attractions to enjoy before and after the film.

The Electric, Birmingham

The UK’s oldest working cinema is also one of the finest according to our followers on Twitter and Facebook.

The Electric opened on Station Street in 1909 showing silent films and was recently renovated to its original Art Deco look and reopened after a short closure in 2004.

On Twitter, Sarah Hunter praised The Electric for showing great films and said that it is “small, so it’s nice and intimate and they serve wine!”

Cineworld, Wednesfield

The only multiplex on our list, a Bentley Bridge setting means that the Cineworld in Wednesfield can offer a lot more than just films.

Tom Haynes recommended it on Twitter for being busy with a friendly and exciting environment, offering excellent local facilities such as Nando’s and the bowling alley, as well as having good transport links.

Electric Palace Picture House, Cannock

Also recommended by our readers was the Picture House in Cannock, which offers the latest films at good prices.

Steve O’Brien told us on Facebook: “They’ve got leather sofas and tub chairs and a balcony in their prime screen. Nice little food bar, too. To be honest, it’s a refreshing and welcome change from these soulless multiplexes.”

Reel Quinton, Halesowen

Last, but not least is the Reel cinema in Halesowen, which is another of the oldest picture houses in the country and offers four screens.

Steve Briscoe told us on Facebook that “it’s got a old feeling about it and a lovely atmosphere too.”
