Fly control tips for the homeowner

Commercial Feature

Flies can be a major problem for homeowners, particularly during the summer. Not only can they spoil food, spread germs and disease, but also they are generally irritating as they buzz and fly around. Luckily, there are many easy ways to dissuade them from entering your home that you can implement cheaply and quickly.

Fly control is a persistent problem for many households, predominantly when the weather is warmer. The unmistakeable, annoying buzzing sound of flies has proved to be somewhat of a nuisance when it comes to maintaining harmony in the home. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you cannot seem to get rid of this pesky insect.

Apart from being highly irritating, flies also carry the added threat of transmittable diseases, making this issue even more important to deal with quickly should an infestation arise. Your health and that of your family is at risk if you do not maintain a high enough level of fly control within your home.

The most common fly is the housefly, which has the ability to spread no fewer than five diseases at any one time, including salmonella and tuberculosis.

There are a few easy to spot signs that you have a fly problem. The presence of live and dead insects is the most obvious, however you should also be on the lookout for fly spots or droppings, and maggots that are flies in their larval stage.

The most common way that flies are able to enter your home is through open windows and doors. To prevent them from entering, you can fit all windows and doors with mesh screen coverings. You will find these in most hardware stores, and they are very easy to fit.

Similarly fitting a screen door on the outside of your front and back doors can also help to keep flies out.

One of the major attractions to flies is food that has been left uncovered. Simple measures, such as covering foodstuffs, can go a long way to keeping flies at bay. Many of the diseases they carry are spread through the fly landing on food before we consume it, so ensure you keep food hygiene standards high at all times.

Another method of fly control is disposing properly of leftovers. Decaying food provides an ideal breeding ground for flies to lay their eggs, which then develop into maggots. It won’t be long before the issue could escalate into an infestation.

A popular breeding ground for the fly is the rubbish bin. You should always aim to ensure that your waste bins are tightly sealed and free from food debris to avoid attracting these unwanted bugs. Make sure that bin liners are adequately secured in order to avoid flies nesting and laying their eggs.

You can also try killing flies outside the home, which in turn will reduce the number of insects making it inside your property intact. Try placing sticky fly strips outside the entrance to your home, although not in the way of where people walk. You’ll also find that an electric bug zapper can be effective, and will kill all manner of flying insects.

Many homes have pets, but always remain vigilant, as animal excrement is a common place for a fly to land before going on to land on your food. Always clean up after your pets immediately, particularly if faeces are present in the garden, as this will prevent flies from becoming attracted to your home.

There are also a number of pest control products available on the market that can help to maintain a high level of insect control. For larger infestations, you can contact professional pest control services to deal with the problem using powerful insecticides.

Whatever you do to combat flies, just remember that it is always easier to maintain prevention measures rather than having to deal with these insects once they have taken up residence in your home.

The key to effective fly control is to make your home as unattractive as possible to these infuriating creatures.
