Wolves set to move for Beckford

Monday 11th January 2010, 10:30AM GMT.

Wolves are ready to pounce if Newcastle fail to land Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford after making an enquiry for the prolific striker.

Newcastle are in pole position for Beckford, after reportedly having a £1.25million bid turned down last week.

Leeds are believed to be keen on cashing in now on the 26-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, rather than allow him to leave for nothing in the summer, and another £250,000 could seal the deal.

But Wolves insists there is no truth in reports that they offered Sam Vokes plus £300,000 for Beckford.

The Elland Road forward, who has scored 74 goals in 129 games, including 20 this season, is just one of numerous targets the club are eyeing and they may well miss out on him as they ponder various options.

Beckford himself may believe Newcastle offer at least an equal chance of giving him Premier League football as Wolves.

The striker, who was also enquired about in the last window, is the second player they have bid for, with an offer of around £3million already in for Hull winger Stephen Hunt. But they have asked about his availability with a striker is on their hitlist.

Wolves want to cover themselves if £6.5million record signing Kevin Doyle gets injured, with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake still to score in open play while Andy Keogh and Stefan Maierhofer are out injured.

Vokes has recently returned from a three-month loan spell at Elland Road, where he played alongside Beckford.

On the whole, chief executive Jez Moxey urged fans to be patient.

He said: “We’re being linked with lots of names, but there is nothing to say really until something happens. We’ve got our targets and we’re speaking to lots of people, but it’s still early in the window.”

Wolves remain hopeful of signing Hunt, but believe there is plenty of work to do before getting their man. Hull don’t want to lose the Republic of Ireland international.

But the club insist there is no truth in speculation linking defender Richard Stearman with Liverpool.

Hope we get Hunt, although i can’t see 3m being enough! hope i’m wrong.

Wolves need someone with passion, some workrate & commitment HUNT is a great move & will help with motivation of other younger & fringe players too.
We know players like Eastwood & Miller scored against United as well as Beckford did in a Season low for United, not a fantastic controlled ball by Mr. beckford either, doesn’t work hard enough for me to keep Wolves up?

Well maybe he could help as i may be wrong ? – Though more of real ‘Quality final balls’ to the Wolves present strikers may produce the goals needed to gain more wins eh!

No no no no please no, flash in the pan, bad attitude, my Leeds mates don’t rate him at all. We need to get a player in who will improve starting XI, is Beckford better than SEB? NO and SEB has struggled this year so what is Beckford going to do! We must get Hunt, utilise the loan market and bring in a proven striker and Defender.

Hunt and Beckford would be good additions to the squad. However, the latter would be a gamble as it’s difficult to make the step up as Ebanks’s found out.

I’d rather see a proven player arrive in Jan, like Beattie for example. We definately need covet on the wings and extra creativity. Hunt would be great but if we don’t get him I’d like to see A Jonson or a loan deal fir D Bentley materialise.

A striker and winger are the priority though. Hopefully we get the right players in as this season is an excellent opportunity to establish ourselves in the premiership!

    • Winslow Wolf

I agree that this is the best season to survive and establish ourselves, it is a golden opportunity and one we must take, it has never been this open for newly promoted sides and it would be a crime from the position we are in now not to stay up and prosper. That is firmly in the hands of SM,JM and MM the buck stops with them, so how serious are we?! I await the end of the transfer window for the answer.

john. You cannot be serious about Bentley. 3 or 4 months before we signed Frankowski the Express and Star run a Saturday morning frontpage saying Bentley wanted to come to the Wolves because believe it or not he felt Hoddle would improve him.He was available for £2million at the time, but was over budget for Moxey, but we then did sign Frankie boy for £1.3M. Another classic from Jez.

      • TopWolf

Chris, I think hoddle came out in the press at the time and said it was him who turned down bentley as he would not of fitted into the system he played, rather than moxey not stumping up the cash.

Had to laugh watching sky sports news yesterday, to see izale mcleod being loaned out by league 1 charlton, wasn’t he the other striker hoddle tried to buy but instead went for frankie? As much as people slag off Mick, I’m just grateful Hoddles not manager anymore lol!

Top Wolf I missed that comment from Hoddle but I still would like to bet Moxey would not stump up the money. You are spot on about Mick, the signings have been far better over all, apart from some penny pinching this summer. Also I think Mick organises our defence as a unit very well, we still leak goals but Wolves teams seem to always leak goals. I also think we attack the ball from set pieces under Mick better than any other Wolves side that I have seen. If you really are Top Wolf tell Moxey it is the quality of the player that really counts not the quality of the deal.If you pay over the odds for quality you will still get a large chunk of your money back,if you buy cheap dross you often lose the lot;just like Frankie.

There is no way I can see MM going for a player unproven in the premier, because he would be replacing like for like.

I would be amazed if Mick rates Beckford higher than SEB (or Keogh for that matter). So this is just paper talk.

But I think we are showing our ambition to get in a striker (I’d love us to get Benny McCarthy) and winger (Hunt or Johnson hopefully).

To everybody on this board claiming Beckford is not good enough, i advise you to buy a copy of Leeds’ 1-0 win over Man Utd and watch his performance against one of the best teams in Europe, if not, the World.

Then come back to me and tell me he’s not good enough for the Premiership.

    • Winslow Wolf

Ok He’s not good enough for the premiership, he should have had a hattrick in that game, playing against a United side that turned in one of the worst performance sof the decade. The FA cup always throws these things up, if every striker who bagged a goal against a top club in the FA cup was good enough for the prem we’d be overloaded. DJ Campbell anyone? Essandoh? The list can go on and on and on. But you are entitled to your opinion and one way or another we will see him in the Prem with someone if not now, prob next season and we will see then.

What we do in January will either relegate us or keep us up, I think most of us know that deep down. Blake hasnt scored in open play and injuries to others means we have 1 goalscoring forward. If he gets injured/ suspended then what??

I hear what your saying but it’s not peanuts to us unfortunatelt, Milijas cost around the same and he is captain of a very good international outfit. Plus if he flops we are stuck with him. £2 million to any club outside the top 8 in the Premier League is a lot. Wolvesmod obviously works in a toothpaste factory all day and couldn’t spell business acumen, let alone have it. for 2 million just sign him and if it doesn’t work out its no big deal. we’ve had so many other 2 million failures that one more wont harm us. But then we need to spend in excess of 3.5million to bring in the sort of quality we need. Benjani, Danny Murphy, Reo-Cocker, Anton Ferdinand, Johnson can all be bought for less than 5 million and we could get Ledley for about 2 with his contract being up at the end of the season. Yes I know this is still about 20 million but we spent that amount in the summer and bar doyle and milijas they have been pretty useless. Plus I also realise the wages will be a lot more than we’re used to but we are going to eventually have to pay this sort of rate if we are to become established so why not start now and secure players like this who will guarantee establishment in the top flight.

    • GB's Yead

I think that would be a huge gamble Ed Wolf.

Imagine if we still went down with those massive wages? It would undo all our prudent financial strategy.

We really do need to look forward as much as I like Iwelumo can he hack it at this level? At this level you need many different attacking options I’d like to see us with 4 strikers ready to make an impact in Ebanks-Blake, Doyle, Beckford and a target man such as Beattie or Kevin Davies and obviously keep Keogh with his versatility and to run the channels. Hopefully Steven Hunt will go through soon.

I’m sorry I disagree Laughing he is not a natural goalscorer his attempts to gaols ratio bears this out. He has a decent record at Div 3 but frankly SEB would easlily double that at that level. Not the player he was but as we saw in the Champions League he still can finish. Not getting a look in at Utd and is desperate for first team action to attempt to get in the World Cup squad. We don’t just have to look in this country, Kerzhakov, Gomes, Gudjohnsen, Kuranyi, Mbokani are five names that could well be available at £5mil and below and are all of the quality we need (helps if you watch football other than the prem too!)Not to mention Jason Roberts, Beni McCArthy and as you say James Beattie. Test Viles resolve to keep Heskey with £3.5 mil maybe? They are out there thats why we have scouts, other sides around us are clearly making moves. I hope we have a acout at the African Nations.

The reason why ebanks-blake fails in the prem is because he’s too small and he is about a yard off pace..

IMO Beckford would be a big risk regardless of how he played against Man. Utd!
A single game (WolvesMod) is not a guide to how good or bad a player is.
League 1 is a world away from the PL and like Beckford, Eastwood came with a similar reputation, didn’t fit in and caused a rumpus all round when despatched to Coventry but Mick was right about him and I think many will be right about Beckford – leave him be, there are better players around than him and at 26yo he is too old for a first chance at the PL!
Let him go to Newcastle and we will see if he’s good enough at Championship level, if he is, then he may well play in the PL next season but if he isn’t, then Wolves will have saved vital cash on another player whose reputation was bigger than his ability!

As for Seb, I think he’ll come good, unfortunately he needs a bit of time, not a luxury he has at this level tho & Beckford, hmmm, still on the fence, if the club wanna gamble then maybe but Vokes will be a much better player in years to come…

i think there is some truth in this and wolves are interested. Eastwood scored a cracking free kick against man utd and we signed him on the strength of that. Havnt really seen much of beckford to judge , but we need to gamble on another striker from somewhere! He will struggle against prem defences and wont get too many chances, but hes full of confidence and if he was to score just 4 goals and they were all winners that could keep us up
We need more goals and SEB, and co arent doing it.

This is old news, the Vokes offer was reported weeks back. As for Beckford, I would prefer Moses from Palace or Rodellaga from Wigan but I’ll take it we don’t have 6 million quid to spend on the premier target, well my target. Hunt would be good but so far it seems we don’t have much money to work with.

Matt Hill why we even signed him I dont know. He is good but another one of Mick’s not good enough for the prem. There’s players to be had lets hope we can do the buisness before its too late again they will be stupid if start messing around when it could cost us big time.

I’m not sure about signing Beckford, SEB scored lots of goals for us in a lower league for one good reason. In the lower leagues you get 5-6 decent chances to score but in the Prem you might only get 1 or 2 which MUST be taken otherwise you’ll be looking at a draw or even a loss. I think we need better service to the front men then we’ll see if SEB can hack it at this level, he’s never been a “bully” type player who will chase down a lost cause to create his own chances. So with that in mind I think the bid to get Hunt is just what we need (if it happens that is) as he knows Doyle’s game from their time at Reading together. I remember a certain Steve Bull having a similar but almost telepathic relationship with Cooky. I know that was way back then but you need that sort of connection in a side. Milijas could yet be that man as he can certainly pick a pass as we all saw against Tranmere, ok it was lower opposition but you still have to get it right for the defence splitter to work.

As for all the posters who keep saying we could loan such and such, I don’t think we could. May I direct you to a previous article on today’s E&S under the headline

    Latest Transfer Rumours:-

“Wolves will need special permission to land Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara on loan as the Premier League does not allow players to have three clubs in one season.”

Mancienne and Castillo makes 2 players on loan already so unless we can persuade the powers that be to change the rules, ANY player we want to aquire will have to be permanent.

I agree with quite a few others, Beckford is too much of a gamble. We need players who already know this league and what it takes to score in it, not someone who has never played at this level before, we can’t afford to give a new striker “on the job training” in this league, WE NEED GOALS. If you need proof of the leap being a case of too much too soon then look no further than Mr. Kightly. He came from the Non league arena and in the CCC he was FANTASTIC, however (unfortunatley for us) he seems to be struggling in this division. I know he has been injured and spent some time out already but what if he never becomes the player we hoped he would for us this season? I know that’s a negative view on a really good player but there it is all the same. I will say though before he got himself injured against the Blues he was starting to look a bit like the old Kightly we know and love. Last season against Forest at home he and Jarvo DESTROYED them. In fact one of my friends is a Forest fan and when I talked to him about the game back then (with a HUGE grin on my face) he told me that the Forest fans had nicknamed them Chaos and Mayhem, such was the impact they had against them (and a few others that season too). Only time will tell how Kightly will cope. Going back to the Beckford issue though the likes of Beattie, Roberts, Mccarthy have all shown they can score at this level consistantly. The only stumbling block as ever is the wages. We will just have to see how much ambition of remaining here this time the board has for our club. Here’s hoping though, although having said that I do not want us to ruin the club for the sake of a new player. That would be stupid and in today’s climate possibly footballing suicide.
    Roll on the Wigan game.

      Oh how could I forget?

The reason Kightly was better last season was THE SIZE OF THE PITCH!!! Or the width of it should I say. That BRILLIANT (heavy on the sarcasm) idea of narrowing the pitch to apparantly prevent other wingers from running up and down the flanks has also reduced the ability of our wingers to do the same, this I know has been well documented and highlighted on this site already.

Maybe if we stay up they might return it to it’s original size. The main reason was for Halfords LETHAL lol. long throws after what Stoke did. There was only one problem with this strategy though wasn’t there? Our team is at it’s BEST with flying wingers and width and always has been.

Like I say hopefully this may be corrected if we stay up.

      We Are Wolves.

Yes DOYLE as performed admirabbly but DOYLE is not going to score another 10 GOALS this season..DOYLE is not a finisher beckford is and for the first few months he will perform…you know new club premiership etc this will AID him. What happens next season with him who knows but till the end of this one he will get the goals as he is full of confidence and the boy is not a poacher like SEB he can finish from all places and that is what is needed right know…SEB is lacking confidence given time he will come good and can score his fair few but it aint going to be this season as he is finding it mentally tough…As for BECKFORDS attitude what can one individual do to have a negative effect on the others?NOTHING.ESPECIALLY when we have such solidararity existing at the club.
Yes if he scores 10 or plus goals his attitude may come through but by then we will be safe the season will be either ending or ended then we can move him on….MICKO and the boys can make that decision.SURELY he cannot influence a whole squad? So come on the wolves let him loose against WIGAN…

Wanderer I disagree as I said in an earlier post Beckford is not a ”natural” goalscorer he posseses pace that gets him in the right positions easily at that level and plays in ateam that dominates most of its opponents in the league. At Wolves he would get far fewer chances and you speak to any Leeds fans he needs 3 or 4 good chances to score and he will not get that in the Prem with us. SEB is better and if he was playing at the level Beckford is he would score double probably. Matty Fryatt scored tons in league one but has found out twice that even the step up to CCC is tough. As for his attitude it only takes one to spoil the whole bunch.

We need an EXPERIENCED PROVEN goalscorer that can compliment Doyle; and an EXPERIENCED PROVEN outside midfield player that can support Milijas. If we spent 6.5 million on Doyle does it really break the Wolves bank account to spend similar sums on such players???

Hunt, and a striker of the correct quality may cost in the region of a combined £10 mil which is high but still within Morgans promised £30 Mil and wages of around £20K a week so thats an extra £2 mil a year the on wage bill which again is high for us but should be balanced by increased revenue for being in the Prem.
