The one thing that Villa are missing

Thursday 7th January 2010, 9:15AM GMT.

Villa blogger Dave Bytheway believes the festive league schedule highlighted the one weapon that the claret and blues are missing as a new decade gets into swing.

Since my last blog a lot has gone on surrounding Villa, and as normal not all of it positive.

We started to look a much stronger outfit, capable of beating anyone, which we proved to be the case with an unbelievable win at Old Trafford as previously talked about, backed up with the wins against Sunderland and Stoke. People started taking us a little more seriously again – as they did last season!

Then the all too familiar happened, as we got thumped back down to earth again with a dismal display against Arsenal. To be fair we did OK in the first half and for 20 minutes or so were the better side, but as soon as Cesc Fabregas entered the field we knew that little bit of class we just don’t have at the moment would prove the difference.

The classy Spainard duly obliged to his manager Arsene Wenger’s request, came on, played half an hour, scored two and won the game for the Gunners. It’s hard to argue against anyone of his quality, but on the day Fabregas was immense.

We then had two days to pick ourselves up against Liverpool and, to be fair, I thought we were the only team that would take the three points. We controlled the game from start to almost finish but, as against Arsenal, one player with that extra bit of class proved the difference on the night.

Fernando Torres didn’t do a thing all game, hardly kicked the ball and looked lacklustre. But, as with Fabregas, the Spainard won Liverpool the three points. One kick, one slip from our defender and Torres was there.

These two games, two games lost on the basis of two players surely show our manager Martin O’Neill that we are so close to matching them. We need one player who can change a game on his own to get us there. We have plenty of quality in players prepared to graft, plenty of depth now and a few stand out players, but not one who is in the Fabregas or Torres bracket.

Instead of spending money on another four or five squad players, I would love to see Martin go out and spend big on just one. Someone who will get us 25 goals a season and help us push for that top four. Someone like Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, or if we were to really get carried away Valencia superstar David Villa, and why not?

We are a big club, we are pushing for top honours and would fit into out setup perfectly. For a marketing ploy it would prove a real gem, imagaine how many shirts with ‘Villa 9′ would be sold. Or maybe my judgement has been hampered by the Christmas sherry has started taking effect!

Overall though, I have to say i’m happy. Everything is still on track for the overall plans and we’re constantly improving. Let’s hope 2010 finally brings us a trophy though because, after all, that is what football’s about.

Happy New Year to you all! Up the Villa!

Hey dave being a wolves fan we are missing many players , but i do agree with you .. I have watched the villa for many years as i see them as the vocal point of what all midlands clubs want to be .

For me you lack the enforcer and goal scorer , somebody whos presence could strike fear into the opposite team . Yes torres may have been quiet for most of the game , but one chance and he punishes you .. This i where heskey , agbonlahor , carew and any other striker you have will fail you .

Most teams in the prem are in the same leageu as you , one chance and not many strikers take it .
But good luck for the rest of the year and i hope you make 4th .

I would agree that Villa need a class player in their ranks. I feel A.Young is close to it. He can be top class!! But buy big for one player to give that little bit of extra class.

Plus the Villa – Liverpool game was good. But i thought either team could of taken the 3 points. Both had chances but as you said, one player makes the difference.

    Hi Dave

Good post, but Villa will never come without CL and massive wages.

Robbie Keane is the man we need, but not in exchange for Carew. Delfounseo will never be good enough.

I also agree Jack and good luck to Wolves too. Villa lack an instictive goal scorer, the player who can change the run of play. I once thought that Ashley Young was that man, but either the opposition have now sussed him out or he’s suffering from a loss of confidence, I don’t know which.

Also, think of the number of matches where we have totally dominated for long periods but have been unable to convert the domination into goals. Away to West Ham comes to mind. We definitely need a goalscorer. I really wouldn’t mind a look at Robbie Keane because I think the style of our play might suit him.

“imagaine how many shirts with ‘Villa 9′ would be sold”?

Sorry Dave, but Marlon Harewood would have to leave the club as he currently holds the No.9 shirt and he seems content to sit back and let his contract run down. Plus, I’m not sure about Premier League rules regards players swapping shirt numbers during the season!

Having said all that, I totally agree on the need for a class goalscorer and a quality midfield enforcer! I would go for Robbie Keane and Miguel Veloso of Sporting Lisbon! Top cash required, but they’re both top class performers!

completely agree with this but lets face it. it would be a struggle to get those sort of players to come for average wages no cl yet and to come live in birmingham lol and as for harewood he is clearly on his way (i hope)

good post dave but we need to show faith in our team and back them up completely. signing a superstar is every fans dream. but if the current team could break into the top 4 and then some more, we could be an example to those big money spendin clubs and those pundits n show them that its not always about the money and that u need the heart and belief that u r capable to win which is more important.

we need to show that we have faith in our team so that if ever they come across such an article they know that we r behind them n that they r capable of seemingly impossible things.
