Freeze puts paid to Mansare trial

Thursday 7th January 2010, 11:59AM GMT.

The big freeze has prevented Wolves from having an extended look at Toulouse midfielder Fode Mansare.

Wolves were due to take the Guinean international – a left-sided player – over a week’s trial starting on Monday, amid interest from a clutch of other Premier League clubs. But the freezing conditions mean the 28-year-old would not have been able to be assessed properly and the deal has been cancelled for the time being.

The players haven’t been able to train outside all week and Tuesday’s reserve game against West Ham at Molineux was postponed. Other clubs are in a similar position because of the weather, with Tottenham having to scrap plans to bring over three players this week.

Mansare, who is under contract to 2011, recently lost his place at Toulouse but is a regular in the Guinea team and was due to take part in this month’s African Nations Cup, where he was voted best midfielder in 2006.

But the former Montpellier winger, who has 44 caps, instead decided to chance his arm at trying to get a move to England and was hoping to win a move to Molineux. That won’t happen immediately, but the move could be resurrected once the weather improves.

The player’s agent indicated earlier in the week that a deal had already been set up for his client to sign on loan for Wolves, with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season. But his claims appear premature, as Wolves wanted to have a look at the player in action first.

Mansare, who has Champions League and UEFA Cup experience with Toulouse, has scored eight goals in 106 appearances for the Ligue 1 club after 14 in 120 games for Montpellier. And manager Mick McCarthy has identified the left wing as an area for strengthening this window.

The Wolves boss wants Middlesbrough’s Adam Johnson and has Tottenham’s Jamie O’Hara among others on the radar. But it is understood left-footed O’Hara, currently waiting to see if the Premier League board allow Portsmouth to extend his loan, wants to play in central midfield rather than the wing.
