Council bill of £138k for pay consultants

Thursday 7th January 2010, 11:30AM GMT.

Almost £140,000 is being spent by Wolverhampton City Council on bringing in a consultancy firm to work on equal pay proposals, it has emerged.

The city council is recruiting Ways HR Consulting as it hopes its method of working out new pay structures for staff under the national single status agreement will save time and cash.

Agreements are being drawn up by all councils in the Midlands and Staffordshire to iron out pay inequalities. Some workers will see their pay go up while others face large cuts.

The Express & Star revealed last week that Wolverhampton City Council wants to try out a new approach that would see jobs grouped together. Ways HR is to be brought in after the move was approved by the Tory cabinet last night. Cabinet member Councillor Joan Stevenson said: “The contract with Ways HR Consulting will cost £138,600, which will come from the existing single status implementation budget.

“The cost will also be balanced in part by savings from posts in HR which have not been filled this financial year in anticipation of using some external expertise instead.

“Ways HR are being used because of their expertise in job evaluation, the work they have carried out for other councils and specifically because of their unique job allocation process, which will save time and money in implementing single status.”

The new approach could affect up to 9,000 council staff in administrative, professional, technical, clerical and manual roles.

My father used to say to me that it is very easy to waste other people’s money. The problem is that it is my money which is being wasted by our foolish council

While it sounds like a good idea in practice.

Pay should be based on longevity and experience in your current role. Equalling pay will result in strikes across the council…unfortunately…but people especially the nu-liebore unions don’t see things like this intelligently.

Sandwell did this last year. Why is a city council so slow to act?? Is there no one their with the intelligence to sort equal pay out with little cost to the tax payer? They have had 13 years to sort out equal pay, and Sandwell only got it done at the last minute.

Anyone who faces a pay cut under single status will just work to contract and not give an once of goodwill. If you work to contract most of your work will never be completed and cause disruption at best or strike action at worst. So please don’t say i didn’t tell you so. Whatever you may think of these people, bills have to be paid and taking away pay is a dangerous game as they have nothing to loose. Even your job means nothing if you can’t afford to pay, so being sacked won’t make any difference. Watch this space!

that’s 6 people’s jobs for a year based on UK average wages – what gives consultants the expertise that councils don’t seem to possess in-house?
