No pressure to sell for Saddlers boss
Tuesday 5th January 2010, 9:55AM GMT.
Walsall manager Chris Hutchings has reassured Saddlers fans the club are under no pressure to sell their top stars this month.
But the Banks’s Stadiun boss admits he might have to cash in if the money is right, now the transfer window has opened.
Troy Deeney and Manny Smith have been linked with moves away, although Peterborough’s interest in Deeney has cooled since they agreed to loan Reuben Reid from Albion.
Hutchings insists the Saddlers are well placed to keep their stars, but knows some offers could be too good to refuse.
He said: “We’re in a position where we don’t have to sell, but if the right offer came in which we felt was beneficial for the club then we might have to look at it.
“Everyone has a price, we obviously want to keep them but who knows who is going to phone up. But we don’t have to sell anyone, that’s for sure.”
Hutchings has praised the Saddlers’ board for ensuring their manager isn’t under pressure to balance the books.
He said: “The club shows that by being one of the few teams who were run in the black last year.
“You go through these times where you lose two or three home games to the weather and it does hit you financially.
“But this club is run like a tight ship, we get on with it and they’re fantastic in running it how they do.”
The Saddlers are desperate to play and it will be three weeks without a game before they travel to Southend in League One on Saturday.
Even then the big freeze could claim the game, with temperatures in the east set to plummet and Hutchings admits events are out of his control.
He said: “We just want a game, as a professional footballer you train all week and you train to play.
“With the cold weather as it is I imagine it may be in doubt, but we’ll see as the week goes on.”

One person I do not want to see back at Walsall is that money grabber Dean Keates. Why would we be interested in signing a player for a 3rd time that obviously is not getting any younger. I would rather keep Bradley in midfield

“We do not have to sell, but if we have a good offer then we will” Where have we heard that before. So 200.000 grand was a good offer for Gerrard. This means we have had enquiries and Bonser is clearing the way by getting CH to bring it out in the open.

Wacca you’re wrong pal. Deano would significantly improve our midfield and would be a good role model for the likes of Bradley and Taundry.
As for money-grabbing, sometimes it’s better to look forward not back.

love deano back good with the ball and his cash.

Charlie, I understand where you are coming from, but there is still a bitter taste from how he signed the contract with ‘borough, even though our ‘beloved’ chairman went back on his promise to award him and Westwood new contracts in January of that season. I guess time will tell

Its been said before but we all know the real problem is we have a chairman/owner/landlord who knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
Peace and love to ya Wacca.

Well summed up Charlie. If we are being realistic about our club we know that until someone who is interested in succeeding on the pitch, rather than just off it, takes over from Bonser (and they hopefully bring a much more ambitious board of directors in with them) then sadly, Walsall FC will remain at what I believe is our level at the moment, top half/mid table in league one.
I appreciate what Jeff has done in keeping the club stable (although we still have quite high debts from the ITV digital fiasco to recover) and not allowed us to be at risk from administration etc, but we now need investment and ambition to take us forward. It’s a sad fact, but the game has gone a totally different way over the last 15 years or so and without funds you will struggle to progress.
I have faith in Chris Hutchings and Martin O’Connor and feel they are doing a great job in the circumstances but they still need more substantial backing from whoever is in charge and from us, the supporters.

You can say what you like about Dean Keates, but one thing is for sure, the midfield has never had the same bite since his departure. I think he still has a lot to offer at this level and he would be a driving force for the younger lads around him. Okay, the way he went may have left a bitter taste with an awful lot of people – me included, but lets be honest, in this current age, if someone offered you half as much again to what you were currently earning, are you telling me you would not even think about it, – I don’t think so! Lets move on, if he came back and gave the team that something extra, I’m all for it. Lets just get behind the team. Come on the lads!!
