Collins gone as Wolves look to sign

Tuesday 5th January 2010, 10:00AM GMT.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey returned to his desk revealing bids have been made for permanent signings as Neill Collins completed his move to Preston.

But Moxey, who has been abroad on a working holiday, denied making an offer for Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson after a report said the club were weighing up a £3million bid.

McCarthy is a long term admirer of Johnson and it’s understood Wolves have talked about the possibility of bringing in the 22-year-old, who has scored 10 goals this season.

But Wolves face strong competition from more established Premier League clubs and are playing a waiting game for the left-sided midfielder, who is out of contract in the summer.

Moxey wouldn’t disclose whether the club have bid for their other confirmed targets, Villa midfielder Craig Gardner and Sheffield United centre-back Matthew Kilgallon.

But the Molineux supremo has kicked off negotiations and is hopeful of a couple of additions before the transfer window shuts on February 2.

He said: “We have made one or two bids for permanent signings and started the process to hopefully add a couple of players. We’re always hopeful, but it’s never easy and there’s nothing doing at the moment because nothing is straightforward on any deal and everyone has to be patient.

“We will not divulge targets, but after consultation with Mick, I’ve made a number of enquiries over the last week and we would hope to try to bring in one or two players. We’ve made some bids and we hope we can add Premier League experience.”

Collins’ permanent transfer will net Wolves around £750,000. They paid Sunderland around £200,000 with add-ons for the 26-year-old, who joined Wolves on a permanent basis three years ago today.

The Scot has signed a three-and-a-half year deal at Deepdale.

First things first Jez Moxey has done well to get £750,000 for Neil Collins, and good luck to Neil at Preston. But PLEASE Jez learn from previous mistakes.Paying £1M here or £2M there for players no one else wants is a route to ruin.Compete for the better players and if need be pay a premium for the right quality. It makes more financial sense to pay for quality than waste money on the likes of Halford and Maierhofer.

Also good news that we have bid for a few players, much needed.

I very much doubt whether we actually got £750,000 for Collins. I think Preston lost their manager due to Irvine being told that he would have to sell players and that says that they are not awash with money. Collins always give his all, scored crucial goals but was a bit flat footed.
In terms of new signings, I would say we need 3 or 4 and Morgan needs to show the cash. We have to remember that there are 4 potential first team players that are going to be out for a fair while – Kightly, Edwards, Keogh and Murray – and that makes the squad light on numbers!

I shall always remember the sheer joy he displayed when scoring for us. He had his Achilles heel, giving away unnecessary free kicks in dangerous areas, other than that he was a good committed defender that gave his all for the club. Qualities I am sure that endeared him to the majority of Wolves fans. Sadly a significant minority targetted him and I am pleased for him that he has been able to show his value [750k] where he has been allowed to flourish. The boo boys will sneer at the size of the fee, but that sadly is their prerogative.

We ourselves have already proved that if you want quality you have to pay for it in signing Doyle. What we need are two quality attacking players, across the midfield, who can create and score goals. Question is are we willing to pay for them, or let another club get ahead of us again i.e Birmingham, Wigan. If we do I’m sure we’ll stay up, if not it’s going down to the last few games of the season. UTW.

Adam Johnson is a class player, young aswell, would have been a great signing in the summer when things were more gloomy for boro, with his contract running out this summer, we wont be able to compete with other clubs keen on him.

I cant be bothered to speculate exact names, i do know that we need players tho, a few additions but i dont agree with picking more players from the lower leagues.

Malta & Chris Hoggard – the problem here is that you dont listen to the reason. Blues signed an untried South American for £8mil and who else ?? Scott Dann ? Ill say it again – if you break a wage structure for an untried, young championship centre back, how does it effect the rest of the squad ? Bowyer was already there, and McCarthy has already been panned for the suggestion he might be in for Carsley. McFadden has been there for years.

Ferguson has, with hindsight, turned in to a good player at this level. But hindsight is the key there. Id bet that more Wolves fans would’ve said he was a “lack of ambition signing” if we’d have signed him in the summer instead of blues – did you see him play for Blackburn ?!!

Blues are just having a fantatic season, although in my opinion, I dont think ours is exactlty poor !

Sorry chaps, but the only way to build these days without the risk of becoming the next Pompey is to do so within your means. I think thats what the club are doing. Im sure they do have the funds to shed on a £5/6 mil player and I wouldn’t be suprised if the club has tried other Doyle like deals, but why would they tell us if they’d been turned down ??

How you can defend Surman after his performances at Man United and Chelsea and at home to Man City is beyond me – the man has no pace to go past a man, no shot on him, no creativity – yes he looks comfortable on the ball but also lightweight. An average Championship player at best which is what you get for £1m – remember Simon Osborne, Corica, Emblem etc.

Foley and Mancienne are being played in midfield and doing a poor job – doesn’t take a genius to work out where the criticism should lie. Either the player or the manager is getting it wrong – both in my opinion.

    The amount Wolves have wasted on poor players in the £500k – £2.5m category is shameful and lessons need to be learnt;

    Halford – embarrassing
    Surman – lightweight and clueless
    Zubar – error prone
    Berra – snail
    Stearman – rash
    Mancienne – lightweight and inexperienced
Hoff – should go back to being a chef
Milijas – knackered after half an hour
Keogh – doesn’t know where the goal is

Are we going to be ambitious and putting in real offers to sign the likes of gardner, johnson, carsley, sol campbell, welback on loan or just sign more championship players, many of whom will really struggle to play at this level. were being linked to a french winger, who cant get in his current team, which doesnt sound good.

Alex,Nobody wants Wolves to spend stupid money or indeed return to the bad old days of the 80s.However with a reported £25 million in the bank and a further £30 million should we remain in the prem then surely trying to sign 2/3 proven experienced, players is worth the gamble.Looking on the Sky website it appears we are trying to sign Fode Mansare on Loan, yet again a cheap option,4 appearances this season not in his managers plans are these the sought of player you truly believe we should be going after. It is only my opinion but i would have thought a proven goalscorer,Quality left back and a good centre half would be needed before an untried left winger.

Very good money for an honest and committed player, albeit one with an unerring capacity to drop major clangers in key matches- perhaps Zubar will fill his shoes in this respect (witness Youtube footage of his ‘crowd pleasing’ antics at Marseilles)?!
Bringing players in is obviously an urgent necessity, given our injury problems and lack of Prem quality/experience/strength in depth. Our recent record (Doyle excepted), suggests any additions will be fairly low key- surely we ain’t gonna see Robbie back in a Wolves shirt just yet?? In any event, given the severely qualified ‘successes’ of our summer signings, whoever (if anyone) comes in needs to be capable of making an immediate contribution to the first team, which as we all know is long on effort but desperately short of real impact players… SO, a right sided midfielder, an attacking (preferrably left-sided) full back, and (God willing) someone capable of notching 7-8 goals in the second half of the season, please!

Alex Rae’s Butler ,actually you and Moxey are missing the point. If you spend money on £1M or £2M on players who are not good enough you are wasting money and not building a team.Upsetting the wage structure of existing pkayers is a red herring. Mick himself said in the summer that in his playing days it was acceptable for the so called stars to be on higher wages. Are you related to Moxey or just his caddie?

First of all, all the best at Preston Neill. Although you were prone to mistakes you also had a good goal scoring record for a centre back and ALWAYS gave 110% percent for the shirt. The way you were/are treated by some sections of our fans was/is pretty despicable really. Having read some of the comments on here towards an ex player like “at last he’s gone” etc. it’s a wonder we get new players to come considering that’s possibly the way they may get treated by some of our “fans” (using that word in its loosest possible term it has to be said) in the future and also when they leave the club!!???

    19. “Play Mancienne in his best position at centre back?” Are you having a laugh? I have said before but will re-state that he is a good player who will get better with age, but as a right back or holding midfielder where he is being played now, not as a centre back IMO (I could be wrong only time will tell). Does anyone else remember that when he played at the heart of defence he was easily beaten because of his lack of height and being too lightweight at the moment for a central defender was bullied off the ball too easily also.

I am not going to get carried away with this transfer window and any players named in it which we bid for or talk to. When the player appears on the official Wolves site holding the shirt, that’s when I will get excited and not before because that’s when they’re a Wolves player and not any other time. Once I see that on the site that’s when they will and should get our FULL support, after all, however GOOD or BAD they play these players have been bought to do one thing. The difficult task of keeping this club in this division where it belongs. So as Wolves fans we should give them every encouragement to do so and the rest is up to them. Lets support our club come hell or high water until the final whistle of the last game, after all it’s what the players will be hoping we do.

Lets go for it against the Hammers, a win will be hard but not out of the question.

A few questions and please be honest:

Q1. apart from Doyle have Mad Micks summer signings improved the first team from last year?(you can’t count Milijas cos MM don’t pick him enough and he can’t improve the team from the bench!!!)

Q2. How many millions has MM wasted in the summer?

Q3. If you were Morgan would you trust his judgement to make any more signings? (especially another center half!!!)

It seems like a step in the right direction begining to off load! All the best Neil at Preston you gave us good service. I think we still need to offload 3-4 more now and make good signings still within a reasonable wage demand structure. 2-3 quality players to start with also Manciienne permanent. Gardener, Johnson, Ledley would be nice but its in the lap of the Fat controller folks! Will he or wont he pay the dam wages?!!! Any bets? We will wait n see. Still, if whoever we sign n we finish 14th -15th at least we are still in the top flight. All the best to Moxey on his journey through time & space to boldly go where no other has bin!!!!!!

Bob wolf- you do exaggerate the truth but you are actually speaking sense. So many attempted bargains have failed but there are quality players available and you dont have to break the bank for them just 3-4 million. Anton Ferdinand is available. Danny Murphy would be an incredible signing. Benjani is out of favour but has still got it- did anyone else see him in the fa cup? Absolute killer instinct. Then players like ledley, johnson and Beckford can come for a million or 2 and if they dont cut it you can get rid of them without destabilising the club like Moxey thinks if we do spend over 3 million.

Talking of the West Ham game, anyone fancy Vokesy up front with Doyle? I’m sad to say it but I don’t think SEB can make the impact at this level like he did in the championship.

Or maybe as another option how about Doyle and Jarvis with Friend on the wing. Jarvis has the pace to support Doyle up front even though he’s not a natural striker.

Before anyone says it I know the miss in the 1st half against Tranmere was SHOCKING, I won’t deny that but also his finish for the goal which to be fair was an inch perfect defence splitter (reminded me of Cookey in his best games, what a player) from Milijas was a strikers finish.

Just a thought that’s all, after all defenders all HATE playing against anyone with genuine pace and from what I saw against Man U Friendy is no slouch running the channels either. If it all goes pear shaped just revert Jarvis back to the wing and bring SEB on. You never know but maybe coming on as a sub might make him try much harder to keep his place at the front. Any takers or should I just shut up.
Polite responses only please, I’m only making suggestions, 3 points in this match is very much a possibility if we play well.

Unless we get a top quality goal scorer, a flying winger and another Mike Bailey in the middle we won’t stay up! I was saying this at the end of last season, so it’s not new.

Chris Hoggard – again you are not listening to my point, and instead are reducing your own posts to cheap insults.

Yes, break the wage structure for a Doyle – Im sure he earns more than many of the squad and rightly so, but for Dann ? He was a Young, inexperienced championship player when Blues signed him.

What proven quality did Stoke sign for big money when they were promoted ? Burnley ? Hull ? Birmingham ? Stoke have signed Tuncay on the back of a hard earned first season with a relatively cheap and young squad. That first season attracted Tuncay and Huth – we’re in the process of putting ourselves in that position.

Chris – You’re correct, Stoke did sign them this time last year. Ive already said above that I wouldn’t be suprised if the club are trying to bring in £5/6 mil signings if they can. I dont see how you can criticise them on 6th January…..most transfer windows these days only hot up with a few days to go. Re signings to date, I actually like the look of Zubar, and Milijas was a £2.5mn signing. that has worked out. Halford is the main signing that has looked out of place – that Id agree with.

Collins’ permanent transfer will net Wolves around £750,000. They paid Sunderland around £200,000 with add-ons for the 26-year-old, who joined Wolves on a permanent basis three years ago today.

Having double checked the article – I dont seem clear as to whether Moxey said we got £750k for Collins or it’s the E&S that is suggesting this???

If you add the £500k we paid for D Ward plus wages we shelled out for his ‘guest appearances’ it puts this into perspective

So, on the one hand the ‘back patting’ for Moxey is a tad premature and the Moxey sniping is just as bad

Bully Fan – I cant believe you think the fans having voicing an opinion on Collins would have anything to do whether a new person signs for wolves or not. A signing will look for an ambitious club going somewhere and finances in his own pocket, he wont give two thoughts about anything else. Also I might add, I was against Collins being in the team. Doesnt mean he is a bad bloke and I never booed him but the decision to keep playing him. That was the problem most fans had.

If we got 750K for Collins that would be excellent business for a player where we would be lucky to offload him off the payroll. Moxey is usually very keen to keep deals private and undisclosed.

Kiddy Wolf. Mick has not bought better than Doyle agreed. However our “squad” (which is the key word when discussing premeir football) is strengthened in my eyes.

Millijas, Zubar, Hanahmen and Mancienne have all been valued additions to the “squad”. You could argue that Halfords long throws have offered a new dimension. However I am not sure he has offered a lot else. Surman and the Hoff are a waste of space.

So I do not feel that the new signings have been a total flop.

Every manager makes a few bumb deals when they sign a crop of players. So Mick is allowed a few mistakes. As long as he maintains premier survival.
